For most, this is the first time you will be planning a wedding and for most, it will be a year or more of planning many aspects of your big day which will include entertainment, and with current trends now going dj only for the evenings entertainment - I have written a small guide of some things you should take into consideration when booking your evenings entertainment.

Which DJ? - There are lots and lots of great djs, and looking through the supplier directory here alone it definitely offers the best selection. Its always tempting to go by price, but generally by spending that small bit extra you'll find that you get the better return by having somebody with more experience, lighting and equipment and this for me is invaluable and will give better peace of mind, especially if your dj is on from the first dance. It is important to look for references, or get to view your dj before you book - this will give you a level of expectation.

How do I ensure that the music I want is played? Many djs will offer you the opportunity to have some creative license in the music for the night. Online music databases are great for this and matched with a sit down consultation to go through the night in advance - this will give you and your dj an understanding of what is required to deliver your expectation for the night. Here is an example of an online music database www.irishweddingdj.djintelligence.com/music

What is the difference between a regular dj and a dj that works mainly at weddings? In some cases none because I generally believe that you have to have some natural talent for interaction and having good ear for reading a crowd. Its only when you have an audience that are slower to react that you need to adjust the timings of your music, and this is where having past experience is crucial because you need to get people dancing and know what to play at what times, there is no shortcut - this is only gained by experience. A simple chat with your dj will give an idea of their style and how they operate, I would recommend discussing your night by phone and you will know how experienced the person is simply by talking to them.

Concerns! My main query when meeting clients is " I don't want any of that agadoo!" We know this, and during discussions with your dj you should mention all the things you like and don't like - most are extremely flexible and won't do anything that would displease on the night.

As with all bookings for any supplier, it is important that you complete a booking form and contract, have your booking deposit receipted in writing. Your dj should have liability insurance for your and their protection, they should have some back up so your night is not in ruins should something blow on the night (there is only one person after all).

Best of luck with all of your plans, I hope you find this useful.
