Bride's Diary

Diary of an organised bride

Chapter 1 - how it all began!

Russell & I met in Club 92 (the Club of Love.) at the tail end of a hen night on 13th July 1997. We got a bit homesick for the Club & headed there from Break for the Border, resplendent in our stylish hen t-shirts with a picture of the H2B's bosoms on the front!! One of my bridesmaids (referred to as Una - her real name!) dragged me around the Club & started chatting to one of Russell's friends. Russell, ever the gentleman, bought me a bottle of Heineken.... and it just took off from there!

After about 3 years, we decided that we needed to get our act together & start making plans for the future, so in the true tradition of modern couples everywhere, we decided to buy a house. Neither of us had lived away from home before as we begrudged paying rent so this was a whole new experience. After looking at some wrecks and ruins (all beyond our limited budget), we saw a house down in Arklow on 31st March 2001. This was a very momentous day for two reasons because (a) we put down a deposit on our house and (b) Liverpool beat Man Utd 2-0 !!!!!!!

At this stage, we knew that we were going to get married eventually but it was a question of priorities - house to live in or flash wedding. Being semi-sensible, we opted for the house and after about 6 months we started talking about getting married & what we would like. I brought Russell to Paris as a surprise birthday present on the 3rd of July (I got to go too - great present!!!). On July 4th (Independence Day - how ironic..) we were exploring Paris & being all cultural in the Louvre (as you do) & decided to go up on the Ferris Wheel in the Jardin des Tuleries - Russell is afraid of heights so this was a big thing!! When we stopped at the top, he asked me to marry him.... big silence & I said YES. As we are classy people, we celebrated with two pints of beer in the cafe beside the Ferris Wheel (they didn't sell champagne!)

Just to be sure, he asked me again on top of the Eiffel Tower in lashing rain & howling wind the next day under our high-quality 12 emergency-purchase umbrella - and he got the same answer. We got home on the Saturday night and decided to go ring shopping the next day (more details on this in the second instalment)
