Mini-moons: Solis Lough Eske Castle

Bs Ed Rachel and her new husband Mark decided to postpone their long haul honeymoon and take a mini-moon in Ireland instead. They travelled the 2.5 hours from Dublin to the Solis Lough Eske Castle in Donegal for three days of 5 * luxury.

Why did you choose this location? We decided to wait on our honeymoon till spring, but still wanted to get away for a couple of days after the wedding madness. Solis Lough Eske Castle was recommended to us as the perfect haven to do that! And it was!

Travel time from Ireland: It’s in Ireland! Travel time from Dublin was a short 2.5 hours.

Where did you stay? And would you recommend it? Solis Lough Eske Castle Hotel in Donegal. The castle looks like something right out of a Jane Austen inspired film; it is stately, romantic and even with the flat screen TV and Jacuzzi tub, reminds the visitor of a time gone by. The perfect way to unwind in complete luxury; it was just what we were looking for.

What kind of holiday was it? It was a 'sleep till noon-order room service- spa-filled- only leave the room for dinner and breakfast- kick back and relax’ holiday.

What were the main attractions? The main attraction was the amazing hotel and grounds. It was so peaceful and beautiful, in three days we only left the hotel twice. Solis Lough Eske is 10 minutes from Donegal town and close to all the main Donegal sights, including the amazing Slieve League Cliffs (highest cliffs in Europe).

What was the best part? The best part was the Solis Spa (and of course spending time with my new husband...but mainly the spa). The thermal area is one of the most luxurious in Ireland and the massage was to die for! It is one of my most favourite things in the world to have a spa treatment, then just roll up to my hotel room and take it easy for the rest of the day. An experience not to be missed!

Best place (or thing) to eat? Seafood! The best muscles I have ever tasted were at the Cedars Grill in Solis Lough Eske Hotel. The Cedars Grill is the whole dining experience, complete with impeccable service, gourmet food and the world’s best wine.

Any downsides to the location: The fact that you can’t move in permanently (and maybe the weather).

Would you recommend this honeymoon location? I would 100% recommend a mini-moon or weekend break to the Solis Lough Eske Castle. It’s perfect for the much needed R & R after a wedding. You get the 5* benefits of escaping, but don’t have the long journey.
