Ceremony Music

I have booked a string quartet to play at our civil ceremony, but I don't want classical music played, can you please recommend some upbeat modern music that will sound good when played by a string quartet?

I'd be able to give you loads of suggestions if it were classical! I've heard Time of Your Life by Greenday done by strings and it was great. Miracle by Foo Fighters is also lovely, although it might not be upbeat enough. If I Should Fall Behind by Bruce Springsteen is another option and the tempo can be changed to suit. If you like the Beatles, there's All You Need Is Love and Here Comes the Sun. Gabriel's Oboe is gorgeous on stings but again it's a slower piece. Some of the swing music genre is also great with strings - The Way You Look Tonight; Fly Me to the Moon, Moon River. You will need to speak to your quartet about this as well, some quartets are professional enough to play from piano sheet music but others need their own music and some of the more modern pieces are not available for a string quartet arrangement. If you give them plenty of notice they should be able to arrange the pieces themselves. Hope this gives you somewhere to start anyway! Siobhn Oliver, Church Singer

Make-up

I have acne prone skin, should I start having regular facials in a salon? I have never had a facial so I don't know where to start.

The best advice I can give you is to start getting a few facials before your big day, five should be enough. Make sure to avoid facials that are very invasive. The one thing to bear in mind is that from day one of your facials, you will need to have a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising. I recommend La Roache Posay, or Clarins. Can you advise if it's ok to get spray tan done the day before my wedding, or should I get it done two days beforehand?

It is so important to get a trial done prior to your wedding, and to make sure the person who does the trial will be on hand for you when you come in before the wedding. Be quite strict that she listens to you regarding hands, elbow and knees; I call these areas the orange zones. Also, make sure there has been no change in the product used for your trial when it comes to the big day. Marie Joseph, Professional Make-up Artist

Wedding Planning

Is an hour and 15 minutes too long of a drive from the church to the reception?

If it is from the church to the venue, then no it is not too far away. Have the ceremony earlier than usual so you are not losing time on your day. Kate Deegan, Perfect Details

My gown is lace and has a tulle halter neck and the bridesmaids' dresses have chiffon halter neck which drapes down the back. Does it matter if both bride and bridesmaid dresses have a halter neck?

Not at all, it just shows how clever you were to coordinate everything. They should look great. It's more important that all will look good in halter neck; there is a good range of bridesmaid dresses to match any shape and size. Kate Deegan, Perfect Details

We are sending out Save the Dates soon, and my H2B has a lot of friends who know each other. Some friends will only be invited to the evening reception, but I'm afraid if they don't get a Save the Date card they will think they are not invited at all. What do I do? Send everyone Save the Dates or just full day guests?

Usually Save the Date cards are for the full day guests, if you get the evening invite you don't have to Save the Date as such. Maybe for the evening guests you could mention it to them? Kate Deegan, Perfect Details

Photography

We are having a winter wedding with a 4pm ceremony, and no natural light for photographs! What are my options?

Never panic about light. If there isn't any light, a photographer's job is to create it artificially. A winter wedding has its charm. Only recently during a storm I shot a wedding and we ended up taking some photos outside in the dark. The bride's veil was blowing which created a beautiful picture. Indoors, you can shoot using either flash or with lights. The main issue will be space at your venue. Can you go somewhere private to have photos away from the guests so you can spend time getting artistic photos? Once you have a photographer have them help you who plan possible backdrops, there should be no reason to worry. Roslyn Byrne, www.couple.ie

Cakes

Can tiffan/chocolate biscuit cake be iced in white to look like traditional fruit cake?

Yes, chocolate biscuit cake can be iced to look like a traditional wedding cake. You would need to put a thin layer of almond icing on the cake first if you don't wish to use almond paste you can use a thin layer of sugar paste, let this dry for 24 hours and then you can put a second coat of icing which will give you a smooth finish. Also, some of the larger wedding cakes shops do provide a decorating service of fruit or chocolate biscuit cake. Jennifer McHugh, Cakebox
