Our Sicilian Vacation

New Bride Audrey discovered all the delights that sunny Sicily has to offer.

Sicily is the largest of the Mediterranean islands and, due to its picturesque landscape, has featured in movies such as ‘The Godfather,’ ‘Cinema Paradiso’ and ‘The Big Blue.’

For a honeymoon location, Sicily has it all; beautiful scenery, breathtaking views, great shopping, fabulous restaurants, historical sites and romance.

For our honeymoon we based ourselves a short bus ride outside Taormina, in Giardini Naxos; a pretty fishing village that has grown into a resort with some beautiful hotels and restaurants. It also has a lovely archaeological park where you can pick the citrus fruits off the trees as you stroll around.

Perfect for Celeb Spotting

Taormina is located on the east coast of the island and is known as the Monaco of Sicily. All the stars come here, including   Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Brad Pitt and Pierce Brosnan. It is about one hour from the airport in Catania and is a buzzing location with more great restaurants and stunning cliff top views. You can also access the beach by taking a cable car. The water is beautiful and clear, great for snorkeling or scuba diving. Be warned though some of the beaches are stony in places.

Take time to enjoy any of the numerous cafs on Corso Umberto, or have dinner on the terrace at Le Grand Duc restaurant, or shop till you drop then sit outside The Wunderbar sipping coffee while enjoying the ritual of the "passagiatta," where of an evening, you can spot the locals   stroll the length of the Corso Umberto to see and, most importantly, to be seen.

We spent an afternoon exploring the Greek theatre, which is still in use today and has wonderful views of Mt Etna.  Take in a free art tour by visiting all of the art shops, but don’t leave without indulging in some of Sicily’s famous pastries.

But be warned, it can get very hot, so remember your sunscreen and drink plenty of water!

Mount Etna at Sunset

There are lots of companies offering different trips around the island. We visited Syracuse, home to the third biggest Greek theatre in the Ancient Greek world and also a Roman amphitheatre. I would strongly recommend the Mt. Etna sunset trip for a lovely evening with its spectacular lunar landscape.

For a romantic day take a boat trip to the Aeolian Islands and explore the different villages. Or just relax by the pool; after all, it is your honeymoon!
