Real Honeymoon: Orlando, New York and a Caribbean Cruise

Anita and Enda had a fun-filled trip to Orlando Florida before embarking on a relaxing cruise stopping in Cancun, Jamaica and Haiti to name a few!

Date of honeymoon: Monday the 13th September 2010

Average temperature when you were there: 30

Price range: Medium

Why did you choose this location?

Enda has travelled quite a bit but had not been to any of these areas, and especially with the cruise we got to see loads of different locations and cultures, and beautiful scenery.

Where did you stay? And would you recommend it?

In Orlando we stayed at the Doubletree Hotel International Drive. It was good, ideally located within walking distance to Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios so there was no need to get taxis or buses. For our Cruise we went on the Freedom of the Seas -if you are going on a cruise, definitely get a balcony room. It’s worth having an area to sit out on sun chairs. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in New York which was located literally on Time’s Square, our room was superb, it was the nicest room on the whole trip.

Was it all inclusive?

Orlando and New York wasn’t, but on the cruise entertainment and food was covered. Alcohol, water, minerals, and coffees were an additional charge.

What were the main attractions?

In Orlando the Islands of Adventure, (not for the faint hearted, the Harry Potter Ride was excellent) and Universal Studies were the main attractions. We also took a day trip to NASA as it was nearby. All the stops on the cruise were amazing: Haiti, Cancun, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica! New York itself is an attraction, the best way to see the the sights is to take the bus tours. We will have to go back though as we felt we did not have enough time to see everything!

What was the best part?

Personally I enjoyed the cruise the most. It was great when you wake up and look outside and see you were in a new location.  You can either stay on the ship and relax or else venture onto the Islands, on which there is numerous activities and trips but are an additional cost. When you’re that far away it’s a shame to stay on the boat as some days you will be on the boat travelling all day. While on the boat you can use the spa, get your hair done while he can go to the sports bar! Other activities on board were mini golf, pool contests, basketball, street parades, movies, library, casino, bingo, trivia games,  rock climbing, surfing (I left this one to Enda), ice skating -and all no charge!

At night the choices whether you wanted to go to the theatre to watch entertainment on stage, or look at ice skating show, take part in a table quiz, go to a nightclub, casino. There’s so much to do.

What was the food like?

On the cruise you will not go hungry, that is a fact - they cater for all. You have a choice of a buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner which is dangerous as it’s so easily indulge but worth it after all the pre-wedding preparation! Or you can go to the dining room for a sit down dinner of four courses, it really is fine dining.

Other restaurants on board are Eddie Rockets, a cafe with free tea and coffee, cookies, sandwiches. Ben & Jerry ice cream - there is a charge for these restaurants.  There is no charge for tea & coffee but for extras like lattes and cappuccinos is an additional cost.  The Pizza Parlour has free pizza which is handy after having a few drinks to head across the promenade to get some pizza!

In Orlando we mainly ate down by Islands of Adventure and would recommend Jimmy Buffets.

Any Tips?

Pay the additional cost for honeymoon package on the cruise as you get a bottle of bubbly on arrival in your room with some chocolates. You also get a professional photograph taken which is a lovely keep safe and a frame to go with it.

At the start of the cruise you get cards which are used to pay for items purchased on board such as drink.  You can check this on your TV in your room to keep a track of what is been spent.  You pay for it at the end of the trip by using your credit card.  This is handy instead of having to worry about having money on you.

When booking holiday opt for ‘my time dining’, this means in the restaurant you can choose what time you sit for dinner at, as some couples had picked to sit at the same time every evening.
