Real Honeymoons: Bangkok, Chaing Mai, Phuket and Thailand

Starting in Bangkok and heading on to Chiang Mai and Phuket, Jennifer and Andrew toured Thailand in luxurious style!

Date of honeymoon:  7th October - 20th October 2009

Where did you go? Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket)

Average temperature:  Mid 30s

Price range (high, medium, low): Bangkok & Chiang Mai were medium and Phuket was high.

Travel time from Ireland: 14 hours flight

Airport you flew to: Bangkok

Why did you choose this location?

Good weather, exotic destination and we had never been to Asia and it was the perfect time to go.

Where did you stay? And would you recommend it?

Dream Hotel in Bangkok - Great hotel, very modern and the staff are very friendly. The location is great; you are in Bangkok close to the main shopping areas and within easy reach of all the main tourist attractions. Their spa is well worth a visit especially after the 14-hour flight. They also have a great nightclub, very close to the hotel called Bed Supper Club; you should definitely pay a visit here. They do a wonderful surprise menu with a live show and fantastic DJs.

U Chiang Mai in Chiang Mai - This is a fantastic hotel in a perfect location. There was a Sunday night market taking place right outside our door. It had an amazing spa room where we both had a Royal Thai massage. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Also, price wise - it was a lot cheaper than Bangkok and Phuket - such good value, I would definitely recommend it.

Trisara in Phuket - Unbelievable. It could be seen to be a bit expensive, but is perfect for a honeymoon. Make sure you tell them you‘re on your honeymoon, as you will more than likely be upgraded to an Ocean View Pool Villa. There were amazing sunsets and all the food served is of the highest quality. It is located only 20 minutes from Phuket airport and they collect you directly from the airport with a typical Thai welcome. We can’t recommend this hotel any higher.

Banyan Tree Hotel - We just stayed in this hotel for one night before flying back to England. It is a nice hotel with one of the tallest restaurants we’ve ever eaten in, Vertigo is the roof of the hotel (61st floor) and it offers 360 degree views of Bangkok. We ate here when there was a lightning storm a few miles south of the city, which made it a very unique experience. If you are in any way afraid of heights then you may not last the whole time it takes to eat a 3-course meal!

What kind of holiday was it?

You could say that it was a sort of a city break (Bangkok & Chiang Mai) and a beach holiday (Phuket), all in one.

Was it all-inclusive?

No, we did it all over the internet.

What were the main attractions?

Trisara in Phuket was the highlight of the trip.

Bangkok is a city that has to be experienced but after a couple of days, you are ready to experience somewhere a little less manic, it is so crazy! But the tuc-tucs are great fun; just make sure they don’t bring you on a wild goose chase to the nearest silk merchant!

Bed Supper Club was a fantastic night out - such a fun and unique club.

What was the best part?

It has to be Trisara in Phuket. Perfect weather, hotel facilities and staff. The bridesmaids and their partners bought us a private boat cruise out to some of the islands in Phang Nga Bay as a wedding gift which was a great highlight to our stay in Trisara. The Spa facilities in Trisara were also one of the highlights, as it’s a perfect way to distress after the craziness of the wedding.

Best place (or thing) to eat?

Pad Thai is a must have. Bed Supper Club in Bangkok is a strange dining experience but very worthwhile. Also Vertigo in Bangkok is worth a visit for the views over the city. The food in both of these is top quality.

Any downsides to the location:

Perhaps the travel time - but if you want to go somewhere exotic you need to travel.

Why or why not would you recommend this honeymoon location?

The people are so friendly and the hotels are stunning. And even though we went in the middle of rainy season, it only rained once for about one hour, even then it’s still wonderfully warm and the rain is quite refreshing.

Tips:

In Bangkok, make sure you know where you’re going - the Tuk Tuk drivers are out to drive you to their friend’s silk/jewellery stores.
