:o0 Are you me ??

Its a hard one to call, at 14 i was the same as boodlesdoodles above, but i was also minding a 9 month old every single weekend (untill all hours) and all through the summer for neighbours of mine.

I know my step sons- older brother was caught doing what "teenage boys do" on the internet bacause his mother left him all alone in the house, he has other issues and really shouldnt be on his own at all really.

I know a girl of 13 who is the oldest of 5 and she minds all the kids quiet regularly and is like a granny she is so mature in that way (not that i agree with all the minding/ bringing up she does either).

I dunno i think it really depends on the maturity of the person in question and if they can be trusted. .

In Ireland the legal age is 14years of age for a child to be left on their own and even then I'd be wary but each to their own!

I don't see anything wrong with it. If he deemed the kid responsible enough to be left alone, then you should trust him.

I dont think he's setting a very good example for his son going off to the pub like that. If he's supposed to be with his son then thats where he should be. Unless theres some dire emergency where he has to run to the hospital or something.

I have heard of kids younger than that being left on their own to go to the pub though.

Add in 5 cousins and change the age to 12 and this was me...... How it didn't put me off having children completely, I don't know.... I had to take a phone call late one night when my parents were out from one of my unlces to get my Dad to contact them immediately, had to look up phone number for the pub my parents were in, turned out my Grandad had died. :o( I was due to start secondary school the next day.... I actually resent my parents for doing this, esp when I got a little older and was in 3rd year studying for JC, they used to bring ppl back for a sing song which would go on til the birds were singing, yeah kinda hard to get up for school the next day when you've had to deal with younger kids running riot for a few hours, finally getting them to bed and then to be woken up by drunken eegits! Didn't happen every weekend, but happend a good few times.... Oh ok that turned into a bit of a rant, sorry OP, your situation is NOTHING like this at all.....

Unless there's been new legislation recently there is no 'legal age' that a child must be to be left alone, nor any guidelines on this.

Agree with previous posters, depends on maturity. At 14 I was a wee rebel but girls mature quicker than boys so 13 boy on his old may be fine but if something was to go wrong has he any coping skills? Would he be able to handle a crisis... if the answer is no then he is too young.

This is absolutely true.

I really think our generation are over the top on this issue. A 12 year old is well able to fend for himself and there is no harm in a man going to the pub for a few pints. My sister minded us every Saturday at that age and we had a lovely time, we watched the saturday programmes and played, we were not allowed use the cooker etc naturally and we did not break the rules. There are mobile phones now, so if there was any problem he could phone his dad. Really, what would happen him, he is at home safe.
