It does sound like he has a dependency on drink. He needs to find a new, healthier outlet for his pent up frustration and stress. There is no point (or at least less point) in giving up one bad habit only to swap it for another i.e. stopping smoking, only to then drink 7 days a week. Sit him down and talk through things like work life and family life. He needs to get out there and get a hobby or some outside interest to fill whatever void he seems to have. He needs to open up to you and stop keeping it all bottled up.
