Moral dilemma
Our photographer is a friend of hubbys. He has given us our photos on cd to whittle them down for the album. We were thinking of making up a minature album for the mammies as they both have a list of people who want a goo at the album so we will be lucky to get it back before our 25th
Now it turns out that he owns the copyright, so what should we do?
You may have to get the photographer to make up these mini albums as lots of pics on CD look fine on computer but are of too low a resolution to print properly. Have a look in the pic info for pixel number etc or try printing one or two on normal / cheap paper to check this out.
Well if he's a friend there is a good chance he might find out... tbh I would never consider doing this, it is unfair to the photographer, I know they are expensive but it's their living, no one likes to get ripped off... a wedding album is special & I don't see why the mum's wouldn't be willing to pay for a wee album.. perhaps your photographer will do you a nice little deal if you were to get them all done at the same time Mrs Lou Lou?
I think I'll just ask him how much it would cost to get the photos printed...we only want the photos in the normal size, like you get your holiday photos in or maybe a little bigger. Then I could arrange them myself in two nice albums. I can always tell him that both mums bought albums thinking the relations would have good photos but they didn't. Then I'm not breaking any law or ruining any friendships
I think you could just tell him what they are for and he's bound to understand, I'm sure he wouldn't expect you to buy the wee albums... if you say that you don't want to risk gettin the beautiful album he's doin wrecked while it's carted round the rellies (thus appealing to his ego  ) he'd prob do them for a reasonable price or might even say to print them off yourself... I think you're right in not risking the friendship, specially if he's a decent bloke.
I'd copy the Cd and print them up myself. Dont let it worry you too much. You're paying the photographer for the original pics anyway. If he finds out, play dumb and say you "didnt understand what copyright meant"!! It's not like you're making a profit off them!
Sorry if some dont agree but just my opinion  [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

I'm sorry but the 'you're not hurting anyone' doesn't apply, if it's the guys livlihood then you're hurting him by effectivly taking his profit/wages away from him... would you like whoever you work for to take a chunk out of your wages for work you'd done? I know on the surfice it's tempting but when it comes down to it, it's a form of theft... I don't mean to offend anyone but I just think it's unfair to have the 'I've already paid him enough' attitude, no one forces you to hire a professional photographer you choose to because you want a professional service so you should expect to respect how their business is run.. if you want to save money get a photography student to do the shots.
*gets of soapbox*
I don't understand how you would be effecting his livelyhood, as he won't be using this pictures again, like what is he going to do with them, he is hardly going to print them and keep them from himself. What harm is copying some of the pictures from the CD and using them yourself, you have paid for the pictures at the end of it all anyway. So I think you should fire away.
If you are feeling guilty, maybe say it to him that you want to take a copy of some digital photos for you mum, I can't see him objecting, seeing that he is a friend. Best of Luck [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

What Mrs Sleepy means is that we agreed a price for our album with 100 photos. Then he makes money on the reprints & enlargements that the mums, aunties etc want. So if I went off and printed them myself he would be losing out on the income.
Thanks Mrs Lou Lou
Well tbh b2b26aug05 I can see on the face of it why people would be tempted as it does seem harmless from the outside. I've got a thing about it as I have an art/photography background and was always trained to respect other 'artists'. Good photography isn't merely moochin along and taken a few snaps, a lot of thought, effort & creativity goes into it. Each photography should be a lil piece of art & should be treated that way. Equally while I disagree with people doing this I hate crap photographers who do shoddy work & try and rip people off & (from the other thread) I don't agree that they should be able to use your photographs for advertising unless you have clearly agreed to it.... God I'm really overthinking this one aren't I?!
