NWR - Do you vote?

Postby Guest » Tue Aug 09, 2022 10:03 am

Just something that popped into my head....

How many of you go out and exercise your democratic right? Do you vote in all elections and referenda, or just general elections?

I've never missed an election or referendum since I first was eligible to vote. IMHO, you have absolutely no right to whinge about the government or the way the country is run if you don't use your vote.

What say the rest of ye?

I agree with you whole heartedly Moniker. If you're not involved you have no right to moan....

I have never ever missed a vote.

I am also in agreement. Have never missed an election or referendum, ever.

I also agree - no vote, no moan!

Totally agree with you Moniker - I always use my vote (unless I'm out of the country at the time).

There are so many people I know who moan and groan about our government and sit on their arses watching tv when it's time to vote to do something about it - it's scandellous!

Always in everything going. Its not just a right, its a duty,it wasn't THAT long ago that women weren't allow to vote, couldn't own property and were generally treated as second class citizens not capable of making "big" decisions. We owe it to all those women who went fought the good fight, who put themselves and their families thru so much to get these basic rights.
Having said that my mother nevers votes and it drives me MAD! Thinks it doesn't make a difference. The only way it doesn't make a difference is if you don't vote.

Nearly always vote, if at all possible. Until recently my vote was in my home town as I wanted to be able to vote on local issues, if you know what I mean, so missed the odd one due to not being able to get home. I've changed it since we bought a house and would now say I'd always vote.

One thing I always make sure I do and that is vote. As someone else said I hate when people moan about the way the country is run and yet they don't bother voting

Completly agree. People have no right to complain about the government if they don't vote.

Fotgot to send in vote for last Seanad election  but otherwise yes. Doesn't anyone remember the footage in South Africa in recent years when people were carried on one anothers back to be able to cast votes? IMO it should be compulsory to vote like it is in Australia & Ecuador etc.

Always vote, sure if I don't vote i don't have a say in how the country is run.

Just a word of advice though - if you are dis-satisfied with something in your area, don't be afraid to lobby your local td/county councillors. That's what they are there for, and they work for US!

Always vote. Have only missed voting when I lived abroad (and then I voted in the European Elections there and managed to vote in a by-election when I was home on holidays). People who won't go out to vote because its raining!! Tsk Tsk. I got soaked voting in the last general election!

One thing does cross my mind, though. Everyone who has posted here says they always (or nearly always) vote, yet 60% is a good turnout for a general election and the turnout could be half that for any other poll. Where are all the people who don't vote?
