Getting married on first baby's Christening day

Getting married on first baby's Christening day

Postby heidi123 » Tue May 08, 2022 7:42 pm

Hi all,

I've posted here just once before about getting married - I'm not a fan of being centre of attention and not interested in organising a big, fussy wedding (the thoughts of picking invitations and flowers etc gives me the sweats). I think it's because once I start I wouldn't be able to stop :o0 Anyway, OH and I are expecting our first baby this summer and I was thinking about organising a wedding ceremony for the same day - what are your thoughts on this? It would be immediate family, a few close friends. Of course I'd like to invite a few people (assuming it was to the christening) and if they didn't come then fair enough.
We could then go for a meal and drinks afterwards maybe in a nice hotel with a DJ or something. Only thing is both our families would need to stay over at the hotel so that might be a bit of an anti-climax if everybody left straight afterwards... though how do you ask somebody to stay over and book a room just after a christening!?

Anyway, just thought I'd put it out there and see what people's thoughts are on the idea, get some idea of the pros and cons of doing things this way and see if anybody has an suggestions for us!

Thanks guys x

great idea!!

i know someone who didnt want the fanfare of getting married and only told everyone 2 days before the wedding that they were getting married!! she then got married in a simple oasis dress that wasnt even in the least bit weddingy, and had a meal with family and a few friends, it was all over quite early in the evening, but it was what she wanted.

Our neighbor christened their baby last month, we all turned up to the church and after the christening ceremony the priest asked the parents/couple to the alter and announced the special surprize :eek we were shocked...totally open mouthed in a good way of course :) ,had not expected it for one second, and it was lovely, low key and so emotional..maybe because it was such a surprise. Afterward we all went to a hotel, had dinner, drinks and nobody left early, (apart from the baby with grandparents)they were all in the hight of good moods after it all :o0 and stayed until closing, it was a fantastic day.

So Id say go for it, if that's what you want then do it :)

Thanks for all the replies! I have to say that I love the idea too. It would suit exactly what I want for my wedding- no fussy dress and not preparing for a year beforehand. The only problem would be trying to get some good friends and some family (aunts) to travel for it. If they thought it was just a christening they might not bother... My perfect day would be to have the christening, normal (but nice!) clothes, then wedding ceremony afterwards in the church with a photographer and some music and then afterwards to a hotel for a meal with a dj. Then maybe an immediate family only dinner the following day. So the only problem I would have, as some of you have mentioned, then is how to get the people I really want there....

It sounds lovely, just as others have said you may need to tella select few to ensure you'll have the people that you want there.

You could explain to some of the people that you really want there that this is a very important day for you and your partner, that as you're not married you're seeing the christening as a celebration of your family and would really appreciate and love if they could make it and share it with you. This would express to them that you *really* want them there without letting the cat out of the bag, christenings are very big deals to some people (obviously they're important to everyone that does them but some people love weddings, some birthdays, some christenings etc. Like in my family kid's birthdays aren't that big a deal but we ALWAYS go to a christening) so I think that would ensure important people came to it.

Thanks guys! Yea I know what you mean about stressing how important it is to us but let's just say that my OH and I live in Dublin, the christening would be in the midlands and 80% of the guests would have to travel... I'll have a think about it all & I'll keep you posted with our plans! Thanks again
