What to do when inviting single people?

What to do when inviting single people?

Postby excitedjuly12 » Wed May 09, 2022 1:09 pm

What do you do when inviting say a bachelor who is late 70s to wedding? You hardly put John & Guest...

Also, I know two single women are on our list, they are both in their 50s and not in a relationship? Is it Mary on own or with a guest??

Is there anyone you could ask? Or even ask them themselves? I know that with some of my friends they were happy to come alone but for those that wouldn't know anyone we gave a plus one.

Do they normally go to things on their own? Will they know many people? One of our neighbours is a widow and we are going to put + guest on her invite. She might like to bring a friend/daughter with her as she won't know a lot of people there and is quite quiet. But then we have some older relations also widows but their sons and daughters are invited and we are inviting them on their own as they never bring anyone with them to family occasions. If we aren't sure we are giving them a plus 1 they might decide not to use it. Younger friends if they know a lot of people and are single it is just them being invited, if they won't know anyone they will have a plus 1.

I got an invite addressed just to me for the only wedding I've ever been single going to, I knew one other person going who wasn't in the bridal party so I met her on the day and we were sitting at a table full of single friends, partners of people in the bridal party etc.

would they know other guests at the wedding? Would they feel comfortable mingling with others. We had one or two guests who knew no-one really and we just put "Mary & Guest" on them. But if they were single but knew plenty of other i would just put Mary on it

Personally, if it was me, I would give them all a plus one. They may not bring anyone with them but its nice to give them the option. I know from single friends that it can be daunting to be invited to something like a wedding and not get the option of a plus one. I know your guests are of an older generation but they may appreciate having someone to go with them for company, or just for the sake of driving them!

+1 i think its better to give them the option and leave the decision up to them.

We are inviting a group of older bachelors who all hang around together, so we're not giving them +1s, as we know they don't have partners or wives and will most likely be together on the day.

For younger friends, like the OH's brother & sister, cousin, and a few neighbours, we're giving +1s because they might like to bring a guest and they could bring someone they were seeing that we didn't know about.

I have had the embarrassment of being asked to a wedding on my own when I was with H2B, the person didn't know I was seeing anyone, and I felt awful (for me and them).

I invited everyone with the exception of 4 dedicated bachelor uncles, with a plus one.

For one elderly lady, i invited her and picked the son that we wanted to come with her.

But speaking of older guests, my bridesmaid mentioned her mother-in-law ,who is widowed,
often gets invites to her '+ friend'
which she really appreciates.

I think '+ friend' has a nicer ring than '+ guest' when the person in question is clearly not going to bring a date

We did a mix depending on the person OH has a lot of single aunts and uncles on the paternal side none of them got a +1, he has one single aunt on maternal side she got a +1 as she would be with lots of other couples. We have 2 friends who would be in 40's-50's we asked one he said not to bother (they are part of a large group) but advised us to give the other lady one as she gets very upset when not given one (although she never brings anyone). Another member of that group is widowed and we will invite him plus a daughter that we know (she comes to most of the group events). If a friend is the only single one in a group they will get a +1 if there is a few singles no guest.

God that was very complicated. Basically I had no fixed rule all depended on the people and who they knew there.
