Stupid question about sash

Stupid question about sash

Postby Flower Girl » Thu May 10, 2022 9:50 pm

Ok, this is a completely ridiculous question and you'll think I've totally lost the plot, but if I can't turn to the Wollies in times like these...

I had a dress fitting the other day and after I put on the dress the seamstress got out the ivory satin sash I'm wearing with it. I'm having it tied in a bow to the side, and as I'm wearing my hair swept to the left with a flower in it, I was planning to tie the bow on the right to kind of balance it out, if you know what I mean.

So when I asked the lady to tie it on the right hand side, she looked at me with a very sceptical face and said "Oh, I don't know... most people have it tied to the left...". She seemed reeeeeeeally reluctant to do it the other way, so I just said "Fine' and left it on the left.

Ladies, is there any earthly reason why it would matter which side the bow is on? The dress itself is totally symmetrical, it's not a one-shoulder or anything. Does it matter at all? Or am I, perhaps (perish the thought), overthinking this?

Please help!

Maybe it's because of which side of the aisle you'd be standing on? If you're on the right hand side, you'll be turning to the groom and so your left side will be visible to the crowd and the sash mightn't be visible. That's the only logical reason I can think of!

Apparently the left side of the body is female... don't believe it myself but maybe your dressmaker does! :-8

fixibelles idea sounds a little more plausible!!!

BTW - the only reason I know this is I bruised really badly one time and went to the chemist - his response was "Ah sure you'll heal quickly on that side, it's the female side" :duh:

yeah, that's a bit of a strange one alright..... i think it sounds like another case of a supplier's preconceived/set ideas...! it stretches across the board, from florists to, well, seamstresses..! can't think why it would otherwise matter to her whether you tied the bow on your head if that's what you wanted! maybe you could have your upstyle on the right side now instead, to balance it out?

Thanks for the advice! I had thought about the 'which side you're standing on at the altar' idea, fixibelle, but if we do the traditional bride on the left, groom on the right (viewed from behind) then it'd be the right side of the dress that'd be more visible.

So I'm starting to think it is just convention; I did a Google image search of wedding dress sashes and bizarrely virtually all of them are tied on the left! So I think I will just succumb to tradition and part my hair the other way to avoid a major bridal faux pas.

First world problems, indeed...
