Beg, Borrow, Steal, Swap, Share, Tips

Beg, Borrow, Steal, Swap, Share, Tips

Had an idea for a thread, interested in hearing your thoughts on a place where regular posters could help each other out with wedding paraphernalia(SP) they need, or need to get rid of.
For example, wedding lanterns- I plan on buying mini lanterns for the pew ends, and a few of the giant ones for outside the church for our winter wedding, i plan on getting lots of future use from them in my garden and BBQ area (someday!), etc, but my point is I would love to lend them to another bride nearby... I hate waste and unneccessary expense .

Also, random bargains, advice, ideas coud be shared.

Interested in what ye think? *)

I like the idea!

Beg: beg the hotel and suppliers to come down in price, HAVE NO SHAME (we are in recession)

Borrow: A big tip from me is don't buy a veil. Loads of my friends and relations have offered me theirs and really meant it. I wish I hadnt bought mine when I bought my dress.

Also wedding jewellery and hair clips, etc can be borrowed from former brides in your family/friends.

Borrow cars - loads of people have nice cars and you'd be surprised how many old or vintage cars are in your area.

Steal :We may have picked up a redundant road sign to convert to a wedding direction sign but I won't say any more about it!!!!

Swap: Swap stories, advice and info with your friends. Talk to people - Knowledge is power!

Share: Share accommodation. We have booked OH's family and my friends into apartments and houses by the hotel and the accommodation is much much cheaper than staying in hotel (works out €35 pp as opposed to €85)

Tips:

1. No favours. My OH and I have been to over 25 weddings over the last 6 years, we have only met one favour along the way that we have actually kept (that was a potted plant in a little bucket) so we would also recommend doing away with the favour. Its just a waste of money - for example a little candle engraved with the names of the OH's cousin and his partner and neatly wrapped in taffeta with a ribbon matching the colour of the bridesmaids - lived in one of the bedroom drawers for a few years before it was finally thrown out in a tidy up. Pure waste of money.

2. Wine - keep an eye on Tesco and other supermarkets. The wine we bought (Santa Rita) normally retails at €10 - €11 a bottle. We got it on a 3 bottles for €15 offer in Tesco. They had an extra promotion for buying in quantity at the time so ours worked out at €4.50 a bottle in the end (we bought 6 cases of red and white).

3Beer - Our hotel offered that we bring beer to the welcoming reception and that they would have it in buckets available to people at the same time as the champagne. There are great deals to be had on beer so this option is great for us. It's not too expensive & people have the option of champagne or beer - no spirits so they won't get loaded too fast!

4. We got all our invites on www.lightinthebox.com for €75.They were beautiful and everyone raved about them.

Most importantly, don't get stressed. Enjoy the preparations. Remember the couple sets the tone for the day. If you are relaxed your guests will be too.
