santorini as a honeymoon destination?
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone's been to Santorini ? It looks so beautiful in pictures and we loved Crete (one of our first holidays together). We are watching our budget and weren't going to go on a honeymoon abroad initially. But now we think we will. So we'd really apprecite any feedback. I was also thinking of Croatia but we'd have to travel to Dub for flights and that's a pain when we probably will have 10 days off altogether. Really don't want to spend 4 hours in a car to get to airport.
Re: santorini as a honeymoon destination?
Hi bosshogg,
I am originally from Greece and i couldn't recommend Santorini island more. It is truly beautiful, unusual and extremely romantic. Watching the sunset its one of it's highlights, one of the best in Europe by the way. Walking through the narrow streets with the white and blue houses is really picturesque. It's famous for its three coloured beaches that they were a result of a volcano eruption. The only down side is that it is an expensive island due to its popularity. If your wedding is small i would say go for it. Otherwise accommodation, flights etc might be dear. I am sure that with a bit of research you will find some bargains nowdays in Greece:) Good luck with your wedding preparation and if you wish more info i would be glad to help. It's a stunning island. We did a day trip from Crete a few years ago. It's up there with one of the nicest locations I've been to.
It would however depend on how long you are going for I would say, and if you are looking for activity packed holiday. It's a small island so 2 weeks there might be a bit too long, unless you're like me and are just happy out in the sun on the beach day in day out and as long as there are some restaurants and drinking establishments closeby ![]() ![]() Re: santorini as a honeymoon destination?
We spent a week in Santorini back in 2009, it was one of the best weeks of our lives! Beautiful island, beaches & people. It was expensive but worth it. We done a day trip, watched th sunset and walked on the active volcano! There are lots of bas, restaurants & clubs. But it's not a loud destination, everyone seems happy to have a few drinks, eat nice food etc. we stayed in the Santa Miramare hotel. Stunning! Weare planning another trip there soon.

Re: santorini as a honeymoon destination?
Myself and OH spent a week in Santorini in 2008. I couldnt recommend it enough. It is so beautiful, and nothing like the usual holiday destinations. OH doesnt drink so we didnt want anywhere too mad at the time. You can still go out for meals/drinks etc but theres not the loud gangs of young people falling around. And as was already said, watching the sunset at Oia is amazing, I cant imagine a more romantic thing to do on honeymoon. We also went on a day trip to the active volcano, which I would recommend too. I honestly would love to go back there.
Re: santorini as a honeymoon destination?
Guys thanks so much for confirming my impressions of Santorini
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was hoping we'd get a deal on flights but they're cheeky enough. Cork is rougly 100 more than Dub per person. We're even thinking of flying to london to get a cheaper flight but that's probably a lot of hassle and probably won't save a lot. I was also tempted to do a few days on Crete and another few on Santorini. Ticklemeelmow can you recall if it was a long boat journey from Crete to Santorini ? I can look into it if you can't remember so don't worry!
Re: santorini as a honeymoon destination?
Cant remember for sure, it was around 5 hours but I think there are fast ferry options also which would half the trip. We were on of those holiday packages (Falcon I think it was) which offerred this as an add-on trip.

Thank you TiclemeElmo, we're looking into it!
