hog roast

hog roast

Postby sandym » Tue Jun 24, 2022 12:42 pm

Hi all,
Looking into trying to get started on picknig a caterer..I've come across a chap who does hog roasts and they look gorgeous..pig,chicken etc and he does a buffet etc to accompany it and it all looks really lovely.
my question is, would you be put off by the sight of a spit? now im talknig a whole pig minus the head cooking on a spit roast, and chicken and lamb etc..the food tastes gorgeous and any friends ive mentioned said it sounds great as we're hoping to have out door summer wedding so this would be ideal and real laid back similar to a bbq..

any feedback? am i mad? would it put you off?

We're having a hog roast as our afters......I think they look great, and the pigs taste gorgeous.

We are having a pig on a spit too. So far the response has been good. Anyway the smell is amazing and its hard to resist. If you are worried about the whole pig you can see if your supplier will break it into joints and serve it that way?

We might have the vegatern option and salads on another table away from the pig, so as not to scare any Vegetarians ;o)

I think it sounds great. I was at one a few years ago, not a wedding, but it looked and smelled the business. They really don't look offensive, although I am a total carnivore so may be biased.

We had a hog roast (head still on) for our afters food (served with bread rolls & salads) We kept it as a secret until it was served and it did create a great 'wow' factor. The smell was amazing, and I thought it looked great too. A few people wouldn't go near it, but the majority thought it was fab.

It sounds fantastic. The only people who will be put out are the vegetarians.

As a vegetarian, I would be very offended. A big dead animal being cooked before our eyes... Different when it's on everybody's plate all nice an garnished, that I can try to ignore. You might wanna consult your veggie guests about this. I know it's your wedding and all, but if I was going, I wouldn't be able to sit in the same room. :wv

I'm not a veggie although I'm not fond of a lot of meats but I would find it absolutely disgusting to be honest. I think you would be bound to offend a significant number of people. I can't imagine eating while looking at the carcass of an animal being roasted on a spit - I certainly wouldn't enjoy the meal and would remember the wedding for all the wrong reasons.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I think it sounds very tasteless (pardon the pun!)

I think that freshly cooked food is the way to go, a lot of caterers (or hotels for that matter) are going to serve up reheated food that was made in a factory somewhere and frozen. I don't think that stuff is better.
These people that think seeing a pig being cooked is barbaric must not watch I'm a celebrity get me out of here where they eat insects and really awful stuff.javascript:emoticon('*)')

Recently I was at a 40th with a hog roast and it was really well received, the guy was from Kildare or Dublin (hog-roast.ie is the website I remember) but the people were going back for more and all the crackling was gone in no time.
Any kind of professional caterer will be able to give options for veggies - that might be better than a share of a slightly used apple.
