Anyone not having wine at dinner??

We're trying to cut costs and decided to scrap the wine on the tables for the meal as remembering other weddings I just remember ppl gorging on it that wouldn't normally drink wine or else it being ignored!!

We said we'd get ppl a drink for dinner instead and another for the toast but again to cut costs said sod it we wont bother. We'll just get the toast!

What would you guys think if u went to a wedding and there was no wine? (Keep in mind that ALOT of my family will know Ive been unemployed for a while and finding it VERY hard to get work). I keep saying sod it but I dont want it to be a topic of conversation. Then I think if they talk about that then sod them their sad!!!

I dont know really, I am in the same situation as youself job wise and most of the people at the wedding also know that we are having serious problems with me trying to find work. However I think that it would definitely be a talking point if we didnt have wine at the dinner. I think that I would find it odd if I was at a wedding and there was no drink (alcoholic or otherwise) offered for the meal.

Maybe if you didnt want to offer wine you could offer some kind of non alcoholic drink - it might be less expensive :thnk

TBH I would find it a bit strange to go to a wedding where you arent offered any wine with dinner..

Could you approach the hotel & get them to include a glass with dinner as part of the package?

Your wedding is 11mths aways so fingers crossed you get sorted with a new job before them.

I think definitely offer wine as you know people at weddings always pick something out to have a moan about O:|

what you could do though is have your speeches and toast before the meal as most people bring their drink in from the bar that they have been sipping on before the meal, then ask the hotel to give everyone a full glass of wine when the starter arrives, then just do a top up when the main is served then let everyone fend for themselves after that. I reckon that what another girl said about asking for a glass of wine included in your meal package is a fab idea, hotels are desperate for business at the mo and they should be glad of the business. Hope you get work soon :thnk

As a guest I wouldn't think twice about not getting wine with the meal. But would expect one for the toast tbh. I think it may prove more expensive to buy a drink each for the meal than a glass of wine each.... pdepending on the cost per bottle. You get about 5 glasses per bottle roughly.

I was at a wedding at the weekend and there was no wine with the meal - guests all got a glass of Champagne for the toast and that was fine - I didn't hear anybody commenting about it at all ..

Personally I would usually expect there to be wine... But then i loves me wine!!! But the two weddings I've been to that didnt have wine, at the first the groom's family were some fundamentalist religious types so we put it down to them disapproving if it were supplied and just got our own in; the second one we were given a drink on arrival and then again for the toast but still bought wine for the table...

I wouldnt miss it at all - i think people EXPECTING wine can get off their bums and go to the bar and buy themselves a glass :o0

We're just having 1 drink per person for the toast.

I wouldn't think twice if I went to a wedding with no wine at dinner. I think like you said, offering a drink at dinner is almost better. Some people don't enjoy wine with their dinner and could prefer something else and if people wanted wine they could have that as their choice. I think it's a great idea personally!! I am in the same situation as you jobwise so I know how tough it is and trying to save for a wedding so cut costs wherever you can. Hope something comes up for you soon.x

How much would wine work out as?

If you have reasonable corkage you could get your own wine very cheaply. For example 5 euro for corkage and another 4 for the wine means 9 per bottle (4.50 per person)

We did not have corkage so bought the house wine at 19 a bottle with one bottle per two so it was 9.50 per person. We decided to not have toast drink (as speeches were before dinner)

Two drinks from the bar would realistically cost more than that

I wouldn't think anything of not getting wine at a wedding most people just drink it because it's there, any wedding I've been at I've rarely seen people continue drinking wine for the rest of the night, so in my opinion it's just a token from the couple as opposed to a necessity! If you can't afford it don't have it, don't be stressing yourself worrying about a glass of wine for people!! They'll always frind something to be giving out about anyway!!! :wv

This is something my parents and aunt and uncle have been talking about for the last week or two.
I had wine at my wedding and it worked out at €600 in total for the hotel house wine (both red and white) for 135 guests. I also bought my guests a round of drinks for the toasts and that totaled €535. I had budgeted €1200 for both of these so as you can imagine I was delighted to have come in well under budget. This was a bit of an unpredicable spend!!

My cousin got married two weeks ago and had no wine and no drink for the toasts. I think it was unlucky for them to be so close to another family wedding, it was only natural that people were going to compare the two. In fact, we joked about it (bride to bride!) in the run up to our days. However, I know for a fact people noticed the 'lack' of wine and drinks at my cousins wedding.

To each their own, the lads had a great day nonetheless and we really enjoyed the day as guests.

I've never been to a wedding without wine, but then I've never gone over to someones house for dinner without been offered a glass of wine, or gone out to a restaurant without it either.
I would notice it sorry :-8

, but only in the same way as I would notice if there was no starter or no dessert, I would presume there would be wine the same way I would presume I'll get a cup of tea afterwards.
If you can't afford it then you can't afford it, but people will mention it, not necessarily in a bitchy way, just because it's unusual.
I think wine is cheaper than a drink from the bar, if you buy your own, and negotiate your corkage, at half a bottle a head.
