Well there will be a vegie option and I'll make sure its a damn good one - not impressed with hotels that doll out those spring rolls at any opportunity. Think we'll offer a pasta dish or just plain veg (many veggies I know would actually prefer the latter). Don't think they'll write the veggie option on the menu though.
Hi Leasainm,
Sorry to do this but i really really strongly disagree with just vegetables on the plate for a veggie that’s what bad hotels do when they cant cater for veggies (either that or omelette and as mentioned above spring rolls ), in the majority of cases (not all i grant you ) a true veggie would get very very board very very quickly if they were just constantly given standard vegetables every time them go out for a nice dinner. A very nice pasta dish, something with goats cheese, but my pet hate is when i get a very nice pasta dish and the they come around with the vegetables, the last time this happened i sent it back saying sorry but parsnip doesn’t exactly compliment my pasta dish! Besides the vegetables are going to be there anyway, the hotel is going to charge you for the vegetarians meal so you may as well get a meal for your money! On a side line to this a true veggie may not be able to eat the desert!! If you are serving wine is a vegetarian? Sorry for the rant, but im a tea totalling veggie so for any special functions im usually there with a stupid orange juice (instead of the complimentary wine that everyone else got) and hungry and therefore cold because of the lack of choice and content of the meal. No offence intended T
Our veggie option is a choice between
mushroom risotto or a vegetable styled pasta I was at a wedding earlier this year and they had a vegetable bake which to be honest looker more lovely than what we were eating. There are so many choices on the vegetarian front its a wonder people dont actually go to more effort and I say this a meat eater who enjoys having the occasional veggie meal.
Fair enough T.
I'm basing the choices on my guests though. I know for a fact that most of my veggie friends (9/10) would actually prefer a plate of veg as opposed to the usual veggie options their subjected to(that is exactly what they say). I'm going to tell the hotel to offer them a nice pasta dish or if they prefer they can just have veg. I have consulted my friends re: this and they are all very happy that I've gone to the effort to take their tastes into account. Its up to the individual what they want. I only want everyone to be happy with their meals. Re: Wine, I'd know a few people that drink (mainly the beer only bridgade) and wouldn't touch wine if you paid them! But we're just giving wine with the meal and a jug of orange on the tables coz we're expected to do that with the meal (my parents don't drink and think this is perfectly acceptable) and we can't really afford to be getting in a round of drinks - we'd have to allow €6.00 per person, that adds up big time when you've 200 guests. At the end of the day there are a lot of people going and we can't cater for every specific style and preference, you do end up having to make somewhat blanket decisions. Unforunately budget does come into play at the end of the day, we're paying for the wedding entirely from what we save, we are not loaded. I'm sure a lot of people are in a simular position.
My Veggie option is going to probably be a cheese and pasta bake as I want my non-veggie friends to see it as a meal choice (our main dish - lamb - is a controvesial one). We will have non alcoholic spritzers, etc., for people who don't drink.
I have so many veggie and vegan friends (non of the vegans will be at the wedding, thus the cheese in the veggie main) and I know most wines aren't vegan (so I am okay there) and many desserts have gelatine in them (made from hooves), so everything will be considered.

quote] Hi, just interested. Why is lamb a controversial choice? Im having lamb so just wondering if there is something I hadnt thought about..
Hi Gill Aug 05
Many wines are not suitable for veggies (i think its to do with what evey is used to ferment it), and a huge amount of desserts use gelatine , from jelly and icecream to mouses, etc. You would be suprised what true veggies cant eat, smarties are not suitable, cant remember the last time i had a marshmellow, most sweets, no 'penny jellies' the list is long........ T
T - I also would not eat dessert, jelly sweets, cheese etc that contains animal procucts like gelatine, but I had not heard up until now about the wine! And I drink a lot of wine! I found this article on google :
"Isn't wine made from grapes? How can it not be vegetarian or vegan? Although wine is made from grapes, it may have had animal derived products, for example gelatine, isinglass (from fish swim bladders), or egg white, used in the winemaking process. A "Fine" way to carry on These products may be added to remove proteins, yeasts, and other organic particles which are in suspension during the making of the wine. The " fining agent" is added to the top of the vat, and as it sinks down, the particles adhere to it, and are carried out of suspension. None of the fining agent remains in the finished product sold in the bottle. Not all wines are fined. Vegetarians and Vegans may prefer wines that have been made without the use of any animal products and there are many organic wines, beers, and ciders available to choose from. Specialist organic suppliers are able to provide information about any of the wines they supply - by far the majority of organic wines are suitable for vegetarians or vegans" I don't like the fact that they are using animal products but it doesn't seem just so bad if none of the agents remain in the finished product - then we are not actually drinking them, is that right? Can anybody suggest a good vegetarian wine or beer? It is a shame alcohol does not list its ingredients the way food has to.
I think its a case of shopping around but have a quick look at this:
http://www.vegsoc.org/press/marks.html Where would we be without M&S???????????? T
I was vegetarian (vegan) for 13 years and still prefer vegetarian food most of the time...(personal choice-i eat meat sometimes and so don't call myself vegetarian) and really hated that filo pastry wrapped around vegetables that i got every single wedding i went to, for our vegetarian option we are having either
"Tartlette of Spinach, Pine Nuts & Cashel Blue, White Truffle Dressing with Roasted Peppers" or a "Fricasse of Wild Mushrooms & Ginger in a Pernod Scented Veloute in a Puff Pastry Shell" can't decide between the two though!!!
I agree with T, up until 2 years ago I was vegetarian for 16 years (not vegan), and of course the choice was extremely limited for a very long time, expecially as I happened to hate fish as well! The only meat I'll eat now is chicken, but I still choose veggie options most of the time. I always resented very strongly being the only vegetarian in the room at a function or whatever, and you're handed the same as everyone else, with the meat taken off - THAT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! I have always thought that was very rude actually, and that is not a balanced meal - where's the protein? All meat dishes are regarded as Steak-with veg, Chicken-with veg, lamb-with veg etc. I've never seen an option for a main course titled Vegetables!!!! I know what Athas is talking about, that filo pastry thing has really done the rounds, it's like if you choose not to eat meat, the chef does not give a damn or has zero imagination!! Things have improved a lot, but you can still find places down the country who will not cater for you at all, so tough!
Ask your hotel what they offer as vegetarian alternatives in advance, and see if that suits your vegetarian friends.
