lets make our own wedding cake girls!
so how hard can it be? i'm planning on making it all fruit (3 tiers) so i can make it well in advance to avoid stress close to the wedding. i'm going to check is there a simple rachel allen wedding cake receipe because her christmas cake is simple to make and is much the same idea and costs little to nothing compared to the hundreds of euros charged by suppliers. who's with me?

Hey fair play to you
![]() I would have made my own, but going abroad and it would be too difficult. How are planning on icing/decorating it?

Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
Not many takers for your plan!
Might be the all fruitcake plan, not that common anymore, I love fruit cake but apparently a lot of people don't. There is no bother making the cake, the decorating is where the skill lies, mind you if you just want a simple design it should be doable, at least with fruit there is a layer of marzipan under the fondant so greater chance of getting a good finish. Be interested to know what the final cost of the ingredients etc will be plus maybe guideline of how many hours baking to estimate esb costs so a good comparison could be made against buying it, you will of course have the most expensive thing free, your time.
Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
Fair played to you!, ya i am definitely making my own cake i will have one fruit, one choc and one madeira. I will get it prof' iced cause i dont want any stress days before wedding!!!
(I made a wedding cake for my friend last year - i love baking and always do xmas baking every year.) Your questions - it is not hard by any means!! the afternoon before you soak all the fruit does not take long to weigh it all out half hour at the outset, the following afternoon you get all the ingredients and mix them up basically give yourself maybe an hour? again does not take long. The most time consuming(well just fiddly) is probably lining the tin, cause the tin will be in the oven 4-5 hours so needs to be lined well inside and out. I would personally not use the Rachel Allen recipe that's just based on my taste, i think the savings are huge!!!! i do not think it uses much electricity to power the oven(could be wrong!!!!!) hth can answer any more questions you have too, if i can;-)
Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
I made my own, see my wedding report for details. Stressful but worth it.
![]() Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
I think it's a great plan. I left nothing in the budget for the cake as I was going to make cupcakes. My Bridesmaid has now talked me out it as I would have to bake them the day before the wedding.
I can bake but I've never done any icing before so that's the tricky bit. I have been toying with the idea of making something like the image below, I would buy the chocolate cigars and flowers. Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
I am also going to make my own cake
![]() ![]() Prob 2 layers fruit cake and 1 layer of choc biscuit cake.Using the Ballymaloe choc biscuit cake recipe .Have to run now but will post again later. Need some help deciding on fruit cake recipe.....
![]() You only live once;but if you live it right , once is enough. Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
Only recently decided I might consider making our cake. We want 3 tiers of chocolate biscuit cake and OH says the chocolate biscuit cake I make is his favourite so why don't I make the cake?? Thought he was mad at first but now I'm sort of liking the idea. We had a cake booked but she cancelled on us so maybe it's a sign
![]() I read on an old thread that you can get ready to roll fondant icing in deco bake in Clane, Co.Kildare. Anyone ever used this stuff? My understanding is that you have to put something between the cake and the fondant so either buttercream, apricot something or other or marzipan. I was thinking of buttercream. I am going to do a trial run this weekend and if it's a disaster I'll just book a cake but if it works out half ok then I'll plan to make it. If you search on youtube "how to stack a wedding cake" there are some very helpful clips- they make it look so easy. Am a being too ambitious I wonder???? Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
Hey teapotty, I see you haven't picked a new cake place yet. You're def not being too ambitious, I was considering making one myself as my h2b also loves my choc biscuit cake, but we also wanted sponge and I just didn't know how I'd be able to ice that well enough and I'd also have to make it well before hand so it mightn't stay fresh. I did a trial run of the biscuit cake and it was ok considering I was rushing and had very little time to do it properly, but I got ghreat tips and advice on what tools to use on anotehr thread on here, so might be wroth a read before you give it a go. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=278151
Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
I was thinking of making my own cake initally but then I also decided to do my own invitations which I thought would be pretty straight forward. Fast forward two months, about 800 trial run invitations, 60 printer ink cartridges and a tonne of money invested and I realised that I don't have an inner DIY queen like I had always suspected I had deep down within me. I am so jealous of anyone who is so best of luck with the cake.
I also think it's lovely to do all fruit cake. It's nice and traditional and way better if you're doing it yourself because you can do it so far in advance. It takes the last minute stress out of it!
Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
I'm going to do a trial run this weekend and I'll let ye know how I get on- I'll take a pic and if it's not too embarassing I'll post it up. I was thinking that if it does work out and I decide to go ahead with it then it's probably best not to stack them- really I'd want to have a practice at stacking cakes first and I don't know if I could be bothered making an entire trial cake and then the real one. Might see about getting a cake stand to avoid stacking.
I'm going to buy some of that ready to roll fondant icing in Deco Bake in Clane. Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
Hey girls
I made my own wedding cake and have since made several for friends and family. Give me a shout if you need any hints/tips/suppliers details for the equipment etc Best of luck ![]() ![]() Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
FoundHome did you stack any of the cakes you made? I'll have three tiers of chocolate biscuit cake so they should be pretty sturdy. Do you think I could stack them without using the bar things?
Am I taking the right approach putting buttercream on teh chocolate biscuit cake followed by readymade fondant icing? Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
Best of luck ![]() ![]() Re: lets make our own wedding cake girls!
Coo thanks for all the help. One last question for now- would the brown of the nutella or chocolate spread show through the white/ cream coloured fondant icing? Or is the icing so thick it doesn't matter?
Thanks again for the help
