Wine recommendations needed

We have no idea what so ever what wine we should get for our meal. We are having the usual turkey and ham or salmon. We went to a well known off licence chain and to be honest the guy when he heard our budget wouldn't open the wine he had set up for us which was €12 a bottle. Our budget is approx €600 for around 120 people. Which when we initially went in to him he said was a fair enough price. He kept pushing a particular red wine on us so we bought a bottle to try , I wasn't mad about it, but when we opened it for our friends to try it was vinegar and this is the wine he said he would pick and that if we wanted it we would have to purchase in the next two weeks. I really need advice as we have no clue about wines and time is ticking by and i just want to cross another item off the list. My head is wrecked with this so any advice is much appreciated. :thnk

I must admit I'm no wine expert myself but I'd defo stay away from that guy/shop. Maybe I'm being cynical but it sounds to me like he's trying to offload some stock....

I'd suggest try some of the wines on offer in tesco or even in Lidl. I mean, for 120 people, a budget of 600 for the wine means E10 a bottle. You can get some really lovely wines for that price!! I'm afriad, I wouldn't feel confident recommending specific bottles/brands, but I know for a fact you don't have to settle for vinegar!!! Far from it!!! :wv

You're so right Nelle, I will not be going near him again. Actually a friend recommended some wines to me last night and one of them was from Lidl, and to be honest I was very surprised how tasty it was. Hopefully we will have another thing ticked off the list soon.

Hello Kitty! That is loads, I have 160 guests and i spend €6 a bottle on wine, like you i had no clue about how good wine is so I went to the local supervalu and the manager recommended McGuigan black label, i'd never tasted it before (that I could remember :-8 !) and i must admit it was lovely. I'd even drink the red wine because it was so nice and i wouldn't normally. I think your budget is massive for the amount of guests. I had a wine tasting night with some of my friends last week and they all said it was fab and i hadn't told them i had chosen it for my wedding. Chance your supervalu and let me know how you get on. :hic
