Menu dilemma

Menu dilemma

Postby bubbles909 » Thu Nov 03, 2021 8:13 pm

Would love some opinions on this.

Currently, our menu is as follows:
Starter: Chicken & mushroom Vol Au Vent OR Caesar Salad with warm spicy chicken
Soup: Vegetable
Main Course: Beef OR Duo of trout & sole
Desert: Medley

Now I was at a wedding at the weekend, and we had some cupcakes & nibbles on arrival at the hotel. And come the dinner, I was full by the main course. I struggled to eat it, and actually felt a bit sick from food (I know I could have stopped but thats just not me :yelrotflmaosmilie:

Anyway, H2B felt the same. And now we are thinking about combining the first 2 courses and giving an option of caesar salad or soup. It would save us some money which would be great. But I dont want to skimp on food, as this is one of the things people will most remember. What do you think? Our ceremony is @ 1 and the hotel is a bit of a drive away, so we are providing tea/coffee/sparkling wine with biscuits/sweet table/canapes for the arrivals reception at the hotel which would be around 4. Dinner is planned for 6.

Do you think that we could cut back on a course? And if so which starter would you keep? We're getting married in March so I do think we need to keep the soup.

I think you'd get away with ditching one of them - a four course meal, ie starter, main, dessert and tea/coffee is plenty. And especially since they'll have nibbles on arrival.

If I were you though, I'd get rid of the soup rather than the other starter. I think it's better that they have a choice and plenty of people won't miss the soup.

I think you could get away without the soup course if you really wanted too although I've only ever been to one wedding that didn't have it and that was a Summer wedding (it didn't seem to be missed). If you do decided to scrap it then i would keep the Chicken Caesar Salad and have the soup. That way they have a choice of either a warm or cold starter :wv

I actually think you're better off leaving in the extra course, not everyone will have the nibbles when they arrive so they won't have eaten since early morning. I just wouldn't bank on people feeling full. If people don't want it they don't have to have it but I think the option of the extra course is nice.

You could combine the first two courses but I have to say I always enjoy have soup and a starter - it's such a real treat! I think the lesson from the wedding you were at is not to provide too much food on arrival - personally I think things like cupcakes should be kept for desert or afters food. Nibbles on arrival would suffice!

I would keep the menu the way it is... and scale back on the cupcakes and nibbles on arrival. The dinner is a real treat - 5 courses it would be a pity to scale back on it!

I barely eat the nibbles at arrival as I know I'll be having a 5 course dinner soon

I'd also cut back on the nibbles if you want to cut back on something

Personally I wouldn't cut back on any food.. Think food and music are the most important things at a wedding and so would cut back on some other area if needed

I think you could get rid of the salad or vel au vent and replace one with the soup and maybe have a sorbet course afterwards and then have the mains??
I was at a couple of weddings where they have a sorbet course and it went down a treat!
Its a nice classy touch!
