Professional icing for a homemade cake

You will find it difficult to get a cheap price for several reasons, firstly you are paying for someone's time & skill mainly, what hourly rate would you expect to pay a carpenter, electrician, hairdresser for example?

The only cheap option is to find a friend, neighbour, relation etc who is going to do it as a favour, then you will just have to pay for the icing ingredients and a gift voucher or something as thank you.

There is also the issue of insurance and HSE registration, any professional who ices your cake for you will have to have these, insurance is expensive so that cost has to be factored in as well.

On another note, please check with your venue that it is okay to bring in home made cake as some venues ask to see the cakemaker's HSE cert to cover their insurance requirements.

Hi cakesiknow,

We don't want cheap, we just want reasonable! We think €300 to ice a cake is expensive, even though it's a skilled job. It may be that's the best price but I thought I'd ask the wollies to see what their experience is.

It could be the case that I'm elbow deep in chocolate ganache until the ceremony :)

To be fair, 300 does sound a lot to ice a chocolate biscuit cake as there will be no marzipan involved, especially if it is a reasonably plain design. Lots of cake makers dislike icing cakes they did not make themselves as the quality can be dodgy, as in not well shaped, dents and bumps and uneven bits, it's like trying to plaster a badly built wall, time consuming and messy.

My mother made our three-tier cake and I got it iced for €130 (I've attached a pic). This was the very cheapest that I could find -- a small local bakery in Arklow (so not too far from Dublin).

Mam made three fruit cakes (10", 9" and 8") and it was covered with both almond paste (real ground almonds and not that yellow stuff) and then white fondant icing. I would imagine that if you were getting a chocolate biscuit cake iced, and didn't need the marzipan, it would be even cheaper.

We also got a 'kitchen cake' from the same bakery for those who don't like fruit cake -- it was vanilla sponge sandwiched with strawberries and cream and was also iced (but just with the white icing and no marzipan). That was €40 and it was a massive big slab of cake! If you want any details, just give me a shout.

That was quite reasonable, your biggest cake was 10" though, most would be 12". As your cake was displayed on a stand separately the sizes worked fine but if you had wanted to stack them one on top of another then a 2" difference between tiers would be necessary so that it would look ok.

On another note the only difference between the yellow stuff and the ordinary almond paste is food colouring. Both are same price and ingredients.

Larger bakeries are nearly always the cheapest for this service as they have the benefit of bulk buying that smaller one person businesses do not have.

Did you try M&S? They do wedding cakes. As far as I know the store in Dublin- Henry st is their flagship store for Ireland and you can order samples and the cake there. They have some on the M&S website and they are not that expensive. One thing I have been told is when you order make sure to ask for the extras like tier separators (I don't know the technical name for them!!). These are included in the price but you have to specify that you require them. Good luck with the search!!

Love the idea of doing it yourself Rachel you have got me thinking now too :hyper: I'm handy enough at baking birthday cakes, sponge/carrot cake etc but I've never done the white icing or sugar paste over it. hmmm how hard could it be?! When would you plan to make the cake eg the day before the wedding? I just want a plain and simple cake decorated with some ribbon and maybe some flowers, I'm not into all the fussy icing decorations.
