Anyone experience with the Pain Clinic Holles Street?

Hi all, I'm 14 weeks pregnant and met my midwife last week - I'm doing Domino Holles Street and I just gave her some information about my back and neck problems. I basically just have 4 slipped discs in my neck and lower back.

Then yesterday I got a letter from Holles Street saying I have an appointment next week with Dr. McKeating in the Pain Clinic in Holles Street. As far as I know, he's an anesthetist.

Has anyone been here before? I have tried to find some info out about it and it seems to be mainly for ladies with back problems or SPD and he mainly prescribes strong painkillers or does steroid nerve root injections, which I had before and they're not pleasant, especially in the neck.

Dr McKeating is actually seeing me monday afternoon while he is on call. Im hoping he'll be able to do something about the severe pain im in.

How did ur appointment go?

Hi Neytiri,

I didn't actually see Dr. McKeating, it was another anesthetist, a young guy, very nice. Did a full neuro exam and while he was happy enough he said the hormones are still keeping most of the pain at bay so I should expect it to get much worse in the coming weeks. I don't mind once I know that and he said to call the clinic anytime and say its an emergency so they can see me asap. He said at the moment the plan would be to give me an epidural at 1-2cm, which was fine until I told the Midwife (I'm on Domino) this at my last appointment on Saturday. She was aghast and seemed to be trying to scare me by saying if you get an epidural that early you'll almost certainly end up with a forceps delivery and episiotomy so I said to her I'd rather a c-section in that case and that went down like a lead balloon with her. She said that the anesthetist only offered epidural that early because that's his job and called him an "epidural-happy nutcase" and said she was going off to ask him if he was offering it to me for a reason or just because that's all he does....


Best of luck on Monday - they are very nice in there, I was waiting for an hour but they will give you a good amount of time when they do see you so it's not too bad at all and they know what they're talking about and are very empathetic.
