Hummus as a snack?

Hummus as a snack?

Postby babydust2012 » Sat May 12, 2022 10:05 am

Girls, have been craving breadsticks and hummus for the last few days but I've read conflicting opinions on hummus? Should I just avoid at all costs are is it safe to have a little now and then?

I love hummus - what would be the problem with it? It's made from chickpeas, oil etc???

Yeah hummus is only chickpeas, tahini paste (sesame seeds), lemon juice and garlic, what's wrong with it?

I've been eating hummus from time to time this and last pregnancy...never heard anything about it or saw it in any list of foods not suitable in pregnancy....it is as above poster said- tahini, chickpeas, garlic and oil....
I just did a little google search there- conflicting info including advice to eat hummus during pregnancy as high protein snack on England National Health Service website's advice to pregnant women...

It doesn't worry me at all as you can find info on the web to back up anything- you'd go mad if you tried to follow it all to provide for all possible eventualities known to man!- I just follow the general guidelines in Ireland and be sensible about best before dates, storage and handling of food etc as I always am.

So of I were you, I would enjoy my hummus- in fact you mentioning it here has given me a bit of a longing for it now....might have to take trip to shop shortly :o0

Cheers ladies, I would never have thought hummus wasn't a good idea during pregnancy as its loaded with protein but there seems to be a debat on the internet about eating it but I think a little won't hurt, off to get some garlic to make some fresh!!! Its perfect day for sitting outside snacking!!! Cheers

The midwife at my last appointment told me to eat hummus to help boost my iron count! I presume once it's part of a balanced diet, it's fine.

babydust if you're making it fresh then it's absolutely fine - I've only ever read of it as being a good thing because of the protein etc. Probably better to ask on the likes of here than Google because Dr Google will always give you pros & cons for everything :o0

Hummus is in What to Expect as a suggestion for healthy snacks when pregnant. It's in the '9 months of eating well' chapter. I read it the other day and then HAD to have some. Carrots and hummus, umm umm yes.

I didn't read the other replies on this because i don't want to hear bad things about another food stuff i love that i can't have. The lack of proper cheese is already killing me.

I've eaten lots of hummous while pregnant and my 2 year old would eat it by the spoon now - it's so nutritious and particularly when you make it yourself and are sure of the ingredients!
