Canapes or Favours?

Postby Mrs Neadi* » Wed Sep 21, 2022 12:39 pm

was at a wedding recently and we had quite a delay between getting to hotel and food. now, max there will be at ours hanging around will be 2 hours, at the VERY most. so, we were thinking of doing favours but i'm still not sure...the wedding planner suggested maybe doing canapes or nibbles on arrival instead of favours...to be honest, i think they might be more appreciated !!

future father inlaw has repeatedly requested that we have sandwichs on arrival..which i've never ever heard of being done but though i had scorned the idea of canapes before...i'm seeing the sense of using the favour budget for them..

what do you think girls??

Was at a wedding recently and everyone was almost collapsing with the hunger while we waited. Even though it's only 2 hours most people will have just have bekkie early that morning and that's all!
I would've praised the lord for some canapes at that wedding!! :D

Would definately appreciate something on arrival aver a choc at the end of the meal, think most people would be the same. I was at a wedding last year and they had massive shortbread biscuits, two in each pack and the flowergirls gave them out to everyone. They went down a treat, really filled my very hungry belly and didn't spoil my dinner. I'm thinking of doing the same canapes are so expensive in our hotel, and if the biscuits are the flowergirls favours they can hardly slap a serving charge on them.....

I agree, it depends on how far the guests have travelled. H2B and I went to a wedding in June - we drove 3 hours on the day there, we were up early getting dressed, etc, went straight from the ceremony venue to the hotel, and between the jigs and the reels never got a chance to stop for lunch.By the time we sat down to the meal I was almost gnawing my arm off.

Also, people will enjoy the pre dinner mingling much more if they don't visions of the food dancing before their eyes.
Against that,I've been to weddings in Dublin, where I wouldn't have gone for them as it wasn't too long since I'd eaten.

Really depends on the guests

We are doing canopes instead of favors.

The last wedding i was at did that and i must say it was great just to keep the hunger off til dinner. I also 'tasted' my food better coz the stomach wasn't hanging out of me waiting.

I never once noticed weather anyone had favours or not till I started planning my own wedding. IMO favors are a complete waste of money when that could mney could be put somewhere else

We're doing both.

However, the reason we can do that is because we're making the favours ourselves and the canopes will be complimentary.

If they weren't we wouldn't have them. The distance for the church to the hotel is only 1km!! :D

Think I would do favors.
If your Church is near a pub you could have tea and sandwhiches back there, it also saves people getting impatient in the hotel!! Worked a treat lately at a wedding! I will probably do this at mine as its a 'one horse town' - one Church, one shop, one pub!!
You might even be let bring in the sambos yourself and therfore cut cost!!!

Def canapes.

Members of family work in hotel bus and they can't believe the amount of favours left behind/thrown away at the end of the night. A real waste of money imo.

I think that is too expensive really, especially when you are going feeding your guests a 4/5/6 course meal after and then serve up 'afters' later in the night. Whereas favors are nice on tables you don't have to have something for everyone just one between two maybe.

OR

Scrap both and give a nice donation to a charity that you support and place nice little cards on the table stating this!

Most important though is you and what you and your H2B would really like to do(within reason!)

We had both neadi,
i came up with the idea of canopes and it was one of the best things we organised for the day.Our hotel didnt usually do them so there was no set fee,the chef catered for 70 people(120guests).It cost €80 for the canopes

They put out cavier(sp),prawns in vol a vants, cheese on crackers etc...we didnt see a crumb again we arrived. They were laid out with the tea/coffee and we also got our guests some wine aswell.

Your hotel obviously does them a lot to have a menu?how many guests are you having? Can they do other food rather than the menu?

we;re going to have between 180-200 people. so i guess we cater for 110/120?? i don't think they do anything else. i'm not going to ask really. i did mention some sambos but planner said not too as people would be too full..there will be MAX 2 hours wait, if even, i really don't want any hanging around if you know what i mean!!

You have a wedding planner have you?ye only cater for half if anything but 3.50 a head is ridiculous!

I wouldnt with the sandwichs either as if you are having afters food they give sandwichs, cocktail sausages so people would be sick of them

Our afters food went like gold dust even after the canopes & meal some people would keep eating as long as its for free
