Long weekend in Galway/Clare, recommendations?

Long weekend in Galway/Clare, recommendations?

Postby Sassypants » Mon Apr 30, 2022 7:10 pm

Myself and himself and his folks will be heading to the Galway/Clare area for about 4 days at the end of June. Sort of a mini-holiday before baby arrives while also celebrating MILs 60th birthday.

Can ye recommend somewhere nice and special, close to lots of places but not too hectic (i.e. not Galway City Centre) with good food in either of those areas? Oh, and not too expensive (not asking for much, am I?)

Thanks Wollies, ye always come up with something!

Brilliant, thanks Finicky, this is what I'm talking about, somewhere not totally obvious. Thanks!

I think Lisdoonvarna is a great spot - Doolin, the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren all on your doorstep.
Equidistant between Limerick and Galway cities.
There should be something to suit everyone's taste.

kinvarra is a nice little spot, a quiet, scenic village accross the Bay from Galway - some local info available here:
http://www.kinvara.com/index.htm

For eating - if you like fish/seafood, Morans on the Weir is a popular spot (advisable to book ahead though, as it can get quite busy):

http://www.moransoystercottage.com/

ETA - for things to do:

Coole Park in Gort, if the weather is conducive to walks! there is a nice walled garden area, a visitor centre, and woodland walks down to a lake, and there is the tree where WB Yeats & Lady Gregory, among many others, carved their names. It's a great spot for letting children run around!

More info here: http://www.coolepark.ie/index.html

There is also Thoor Ballylee, a castle where Yeats' used to spend holiday time, writing, though i'd check ahead firs tto see if it's open as i know it suffered flooding a few years back & was closed as a result, so, not sure if it has been reopened yet. More info here:
