Texts while abroad

Not sure if anyone can help but here goes. I'm away at the minute and I'm trying to text home. I have an Iphone and the people I'm texting also have Iphones but everytime I try to send a text or respond to a text it tries to send an iMessage and comes back failed.

i've tried just typing in the number to send a text too but it keeps reverting to Imessage.....anyone any ideas what I can do?

I was away a few weeks ago too and didn't have this problem so no idea whats going on!!

Maybe turn off your wifi & 3G? iMessage uses internet to send text?

Are you putting 00353 before the number? Sorry if you have done that and it is a really obvious question! :-8

should be +353 for text and 00353 for ringing ....
are you on a bil phone? i know with bill phones they wont let you send roaming texts make romaing calls until you have paid a certain amount of bills, just in case you run up a big bill and not pay it.

I tried putting 00353 & +353 but no joy....I'll turn off the Wifi and 3G (if I can figure that out) and give it a go!!

Turned off Wifi and it worked!! I have a bill phone but never had this problem before...bit strange!!

Have you not got your data roaming turned off??

Yes it's turned off Mrs W - should I have it turned on....had it off to avoid the data roaming charges...... (apologies I'm clueless about techie stuff!)
