Growing herbs

Growing herbs

Postby win » Sun May 06, 2022 1:53 pm

I am growing the following herbs outsided, parsley, rosemary, chives, orego & mint. I sometimes by basil & corrindar in posts in aldi/tesco, but after a week they seem to die. I keep them in the kitchen, water them, etc. How do ye grow these successfully. Also, when I remove the plastic they droop. Any other herbs would you recommend growing.Thanks.

It's difficult to grow the herbs that you buy in pots in the supermarket as they are usually grown in controlled conditions in large greenhouses and it's very hard to replicate the conditions at home.

I find the best way to grow herbs is to plant them from seed. Basil and coriander are very easy to grow from seed - a sunny windowsill indoors is the best location. One thing to remember with basil is that it doesn't like when its roots are sitting in very damp/wet compost so it's best to water it in the morning as if you water in the evening/at night, it will sit in wet compost for much longer.

I also love thyme but rosemary and thyme are difficult to grow from seed - best to buy the plants from a garden centre.

Bay leaves - lovely with beef and tarragon (with chicken) are quite easy to grow also. As is sage which is yummy with pork.

As Mrsh11 said - try not to overwater the basil and it definitely thrives in a sunny spot.

We have two bushes of rosemary in the front and back garden - they're flippin' mutants!! They have to be the hardiest plants/herbs ever, nothing is stopping them, it's got to the stage where we've told neighbours to just come in and take whatever amount they want!

We just cannot grow herbs in our kitchen, for love nor money - parsely seems to be the worst. We'd have them in the pots on the window, look after them, but even with rotating the parsley, it always goes dry and brown after a while. We tried growing some herbs in a small plastic greenhouse, but even with the greenhouse been weighed down with blocks - we had a spate of very windy weather, and the damn thing blew over! :duh:

We have much better results with the veggies out in the back garden. :)
