Dyeing a white linen top.

Dyeing a white linen top.

Postby FoxyLockz » Tue May 08, 2022 2:38 pm

Hey ladies
Looking for some tips and advice.
I have a white (now and off white) linen shirt.
I don’t want to throw it out so was thinking of throwing a dye into it to give it a new lease of life
What would be your best tips and advice on getting it right without destroying my bathroom or kitchen?
Is it better to do it through the machine or leaving it to soak?

Thanks x

I love dying old clothes - makes it seem like a free shopping spree! I always use machine dyes, find them great if you have the fabric weight right, although I got a great colour result by forgetting to wet a white skirt once and putting it in with a red dye, turned out a really vivid pink instead. Just make sure you have the right amount of salt (get it in the supermarket, it's dirt cheap, don't get the dylon one, it'll bankrupt you!) and do a dark wash after you've run the cleaning wash. Finally, it's unlikely that the thread in the shirt is linen or cotton, so that will probably stay white.

What type of salf? Is there a specific one for dying clothes?
What brand of dye would you reccomend?

I always use Dylon, you'll get it in Hickeys or some bigger chemists. There are dye packs you can get that have the salt pre-mixed and if you're a bit wary of what you're doing they can be useful, but they are more expensive. I use regular kitchen/table salt. You can usually get it in 500g or 1kg bags for a couple of euros in the supermarket. I get whatever is cheapest. There are good instructions in the Dylon pack, they give you everything you need to know. The pack also gives you an idea on the side of the pack as to the colour intensity of the dye on different amounts of fabric.

Ah super...thanks for your help.
The last item of clothing i dyed was a pair of indigo jeans when i was a teen. I destroyed the bathroom and my legs were blue for 2 weeks :o0

I'd say you were popular at home!! Yeah, that's why I find the machine dye so handy, no fiddling about wondering if the water is hot enough or if you've left it in long enough, or stirred it enough... Touch wood, I've never had anything I dyed run afterwards, and the couch overs I dyed earlier in the year are still holding tough in spite of DD's best efforts.
