Am I THE WORST?

Am I THE WORST?

Postby R2theB » Fri May 11, 2022 5:49 pm

Just dropped OH off to work, we were late leaving so in a bit of a rush. Still drive carefully regardless. Anyway, we were driving through this very dodgy estate down a narrow road and oncoming car didn't wait to let me through and I had to pull to the side quickly to avoid a crash, oncoming car was going really fast and parked cars were on their side so as far as I'm aware she should have waited, anyway, when I pulled in to the side I got closer than I thought to another parked car on my side, bent back it's wing mirror, didn't hear a crack or anything but it seemed like it might have been bad enough. I pulled in and contemplated knocking on doors but OH was like, please don't do that, a) I'm late for work and b) this is a scary estate, I don't want either of us to get beaten up. Didn't have time to investigate the wing mirror either. I actually feel like puking, what if it was some nice little old lady's car and I may have totally effed up her wing mirror? Thought about going back. But what if it's some terrifying toerag's?? OH told me I can "pay it forward" some other time but I still feel horrible. Someone knocked my wing mirror off before and I was cursing them to bejaysus, but also cursing myself for not pushing it in. Aaaaagh. Sorry, I know I'm probably over-reacting.

Oh now I feel even worse for judging the area. But it's actually not somewhere I'd like to break down or anything, being honest like. Pretty sure I defo don't want to go back on my own and OH is en route to Newry now. I think I would go back if I had him with me or was a different area. Aaaaaaaw, vomit-ville. :duh:

I wouldn't worry too much about it to be honest. Probably didn't do too much more than bend it back at such a low speed.

Thanks EB, here's hoping that's the case for the poor little old lady* who owns the car.

*I've no idea who owns it but that's what I'm imagining in my head because it's making me feel worse and who doesn't love a bit of internal punishment??

Ah look, if you're not going to go back then don't beat yourself up about it. Like you've made your decision and as you OH suggested 'pay it forward'. Give to charity over the weekend...you'll be broke by the end of it probably! Don't worry about that little old lady...sure she doesn't need to see the car behind her anyway! And sure if she decides not to drive till it's fixed she'll just have to cancel that lovely weekend she had planned visiting her grandchildren before the emigrate to the far side of the world and I'm sure this weekend won't be the weekend that they'll be giving away free stair lifts to the first 10 grannies that make it down to the local shopping centre in their cars before noon tomorrow. And her only friend left in the world, Fido won't get sick and have to be rushed to the vets or else he'll die. Her only means of getting out of that awful area where she lives...poor old Granny.

God, I hope her NCT isn't tomorrow.

I've been in this situation twice. First time I don't know what damage I did if any but the stress and guilt wasn't worth it. I did actually check the car afterwards and couldn't see any damage but still.

A few wks ago I had a drama with a run away trolley and a run away child! Basically child went one way and while I was watching that he was safe my trolley rolled into a car and smashed it's light!!!! Anyway I went to the security guard and reported it. He paged the owner of the other car but they never came so he told me to go on. The other car was parked in a walkway and was already damaged but still. I left my details but never heard anything. I was glad I left them because it's not worth the guilt.

I think you should try and forget it there is no point going back now. It's happened to my car a few times and not once has anyone owned up! What I'd be afraid of going back afterwards is that you'd be blamed for damage you didn't do.

I wouldn't worry too much, I did the same thing this morning, reversing out of to go to the gym, H2B is constantly parking his van crooked too close to my car, so I bent his mirror back on the way out, ah well!! Most new(er) cars have the wing mirrors on springs so it'll just snap back into place, so wouldn't be panicking about it unless it was hanging off
