Interesting article on first communions

Interesting article on first communions

This piqued my interest today as the local Catholic school has its communion today and we saw them all outside the church. Interesting quotes from priests who seem frustrated its so linked to school preparation and a rite of passage rather than parents being interested in it as a sacrament.

That is interesting alright. It's good to see sometimes that there are frustrations from both religious and non-religious sides.

Read this yesterday alright. Kind of ties in with my own christening conundrum too. Good to read.

Very good article and also nice to read that priests have as much of a problem with children just having the 'day out' as us non-religious do.

We are due our first baby in November and don't plan to christen but have a naming ceremony instead. We haven't mentioned this to family or anyone yet as I feel it will spark some angry reactions amongst some.

We have a local Educate Together school but haven't given education much thought as yet.

I have read half of the article ... I'm in work so can't read in comfort but it looks very interesting.

From my point of view I feel very cornered. I live in a rural area and our local school is a RC school. I don't have an option of sending my children to an educate together school and i feel i had no option but to baptise my children. I do feel like a hypocrite as i don't attend mass - i go through phases of going but I sit there not believing. I admire the non believers for being brave and not baptising their children because I was too afraid not to, actually it never even occured to me not to baptise the kids as I would have no where to send them to school.... sorry i'm rambling a bit.

As a non-religious person meself, I don't have a problem with, or much of an interest in, other people's children. Sure, there's a responsibility on parents to make wise decisions for their children and reflect on the impact of them, but when they're caught in the twilight influence of a fading institution, the road to communion is paved with all sorts of power and pressures.

"So you have to cope with the question yourself [as a priest]: how much are you co-operating with hypocrisy and a lack of authenticity, or a lack of integrity? And are you exacerbating the problem by co-operating with that?” The same questions could equally come from the mouths of parents in relation to church practices except, until recently, cooperation hasn't been an option for them and it ain't in most schools still where being admitted to the ranks of education is conditional on producing the birth cert. Where's the integrity here? Are people solely responsible for breeding their own hypocrisy? The relationship between Rome and its people is unequal and to imply the casual option of opting out as something inconsequential is further evidence of residual clerical arrogance. The grab for ritualistic celebration predates communion. Rituals are instrinsic to humanity and natually seductive. They're what Rome swashbuckled in to help themselves to, and the foundation on which they erected their empire. The point is well made by Anne Buggie.

The Portlaoise approach is commendable but pride of the piece should go to the padre for redeeming himself with this suggestion [i]“a baby party, a second-class party and a pre-teen, rite-of-passage party packed with bouncy castles, music and dance and simply forget the Church altogether.”. Maybe we'll come full circle yet. Reclaim your rituals comrades! And dare to have a "party atmosphere". It's what Jesus would have wanted.
