Social & Personal Announcements
€14.90 per line in the Irish Times. There you go now. There's something else you can add to all your other information. Mr. & Mrs. whatstheirface are relieved to announce the engagement of their daughter to someone preferably from overseas with a double-barrel surname not very common around the midlands and an annual subscription to The Economist. And maybe a slight lisp. I'm surprised these announcements are still going. Who are these people anyway? Do they move among the WOL brethren? Wouldn't you just DIE Morag..

hah!! I still love to read them though. It's my secret shame!
Re: Social & Personal Announcements
My mam would read them every day, hatched, matched and dispatched she calls them

My parents put our Engagement Announcement in the Times as a "surprise"
![]() Maybe they were relieved to be getting rid of me to my foreign husband - who knows ![]()
Re: Social & Personal Announcements
I think they kind of reak of social climbing or something... the engagement announcements that is. The birth announcemenst are cute. People are just so happy and want to shout it from the rooftops I guess. I have no problem with death notices/obituaries.

Re: Social & Personal Announcements
I was named and shamed in the weekly regional newspaper once upon a time for an after hours drinking offense when the peelers raided the local. Does that count? Twas both very social and very personal.
In my parents' defense, they "raised me better than that", were not proud and did not pay a penny for it. Still, it was certainly an announcement to their peers about the type of social climbing their number one child was likely to achieve. And I haven't let them down. Re: Social & Personal Announcements
Whatever about those announcements, which I actually never bother to read, what about the parents who send in photos of their newly graduated or married kids to the local papers? I really don't get that. Each to their own and all, but I would die of embarrassment if it was my pic!
Re: Social & Personal Announcements
H2B has a relative who would almost commit a crime to get her name in the paper. Any excuse - Field day, she's there. Rally - she's there. Fundraiser - she's there. She had her engagement notice, wedding pictureS (not one, oh no, but 2), graduation picture, and has said that she wants a family wedding picture in the paper. I said no way, she said "I'll pay for it, it has to be in the paper."
It'll not be, I'm telling ye that. If she does it, I'll gladly pay the €14.90 to inform the country that she's actually 42, not 39. ![]() Re: Social & Personal Announcements
Ha, this is me, married to someone from overseas with a not very common double-barrell surname. Didn't take out an ad though - maybe when junior arrives? Nah. Re: Social & Personal Announcements
You're now entering classic local newspaper territory. Twinned with NG type commendable court report fodder detonating a series of did-you-see-yer-wans rippling across the town. None of your pay-per-line there and Mammy takes full advantage with a bita National School name-dropping and an overview of the syllabus for that Masters Tommy Junior has been accepted onto in some obscure university in Wales. Wee Tommy hasn't a f*cking notion of setting foot in the real world for another two bank loans, and little does Mammy know that all her mates' children are destined to receive postgrads before him with a postgrad becoming the new undergrad. She draws breath as she spots Mary from the flower arranging class during her weekly circuit of Tesco. Throwing a few boxes of almond slices (Tommy's favourite) in the basket, she swiftly takes the chicane into the tinfoil aisle and prays she's avoided another session of Mary banging on about her Nuala and her wretched PhD. Holy Mary and Joseph I'll throttle her if she mentions it ONE MORE TIME. Happieout, can't argue with that. But, if we're flinging the doors open to all, what about those folk in the "appointments" section of the business supplement. Admit it, you're sneering. Yay. Formerly known as Prince
