Surely this won't be allowed...

I also think that they majority of people are just taking a stand or don't want to pay it. There may be some people to fall in to the category of being unable to pay but I honestly think that this accounts for a very small majority.

WE THE TAXPAYERS ARE PAYING FOR THIS!

Well it can come from other "Big Boys" pockets and not mine, Thank You. Big Phil refuses to pay his in his Holiday Home.

I have had enough and will not be paying this. It's about time we all stood up and made them change their direction. Stop taking from and bullying the less well off and grow a pair and start taking more from the Rich.

The consultant saga for example. O'Reilly wanted to stop Home Help and fleece the special needs as he had to find the money BUT he hasn't the Balls to take from these who are earning 250k+ ( mosy at €500K) and some even 1million a year!

I agree with you on the unsecured bondholders but you are incorrect about the consultant salaries-the average before allowances is 161,000 and about 500 are on just over 200,000 from public salary. The big salaries-500k = are those with private practices/earnings. What can he do about those? Plus when you are on that big money you pay a lot of tax, which we desperately need.
Just think consultants are an easy target. It takes years-10 years after med school i think-to become one so why shouldn't they get good salary. Plenty of high ranking nurses getting a fortune in overtime payments and on big wages plus health managers on almost same wages as consultants. Not a word about them though.

There are penalties for those who won't pay. They are two separate issues. Penalising students for the 'crime' of another person won't technically be immoral and illegal if it's really looked into.

The household charge and student grants have nothing to do with each other.

IslandHill my example is only a breath out of my mouth I know. I fully believe you about the overtime and some nurses and health managers also. We are not told this at the moment, I wonder why? This would not be good for the public to know this and the amount that people are being paid. My blood pressure is rising very rapidly.

I agree that education is paramount to us all and even that the more you study and the time you spend should then extend you a higher salary. But not at the detriment of the whole social structure or indeed Health System that we have.

Is it okay to take the away the allocation to the Home carers or indeed the special needs themselves because some consultant somewhere has trained for 10 years? Or indeed all of them?
I don't care, I'm more preoccupied with the fact that people who need assistance aren't getting the proper care and their superiors that control this situation are not being afflicted.

I really have very little Boo Hoo left for the minimum paid of €161,000 + perks, or whatever we want to call it these days and the extra salaries that private work bestows on them and that they pay TAX. WE all pay Tax just some of more percentage size than others when you analyse properly.

I must say this to the next person who has special needs and lives in terror in their small little house and expresses a worry or stress over their burden. Sorry that you can barely afford to eat and pay your bills and live but your superiors have great reasons to justify their huge pay and drainage of the system.

To be fair, Id hardly call Consultants or Surgeons, or any skilled member of the healthcare system a "drainage" on the system. Many Consultants are putting in dogs' hours for they do. They are paramount to the public.

Why do people hear the word 'consultant', slap a fabricated salary of 500k + on them and make them out to be vulgar?

just saw a headline there saying that the taxman will be coming after those who haven't paid. Wonder how they'll do that!

Student grants are assessed on the parents income.
Also, parents are entitled to get tax back for tuition paid (e.g. when there are 2 more children, they get discounts on the fees) so I think it's fair enough to ask for proof of paying the household charge. The same doesn't apply for motor tax and tv licence because they are not collected by the councils. The individual councils have responsibility for the household charge collection and their budget gets cut if it's not collected so of course they need to find whatever means they can to chase it up. I understand that some people genuinely can't pay and I think they would be dealt with on a case by case basis. But anyone I know who hasn't paid the household charge hasn't paid it because they don't want to, not because they can't afford to.

On the consultants, i think that anyone who is going to be cutting people open and saving lives deserves to be well paid!! I do think however that there could be better work practices in place.
