EPO for dogs coat

Postby Ellefun » Thu Mar 15, 2022 1:55 pm

Does anyone give their dog Evening Primrose Oil for their coat? I've read that it is safe and gives them a healthy shine. I dropped a capsule meant for my own consumption and my cavvy wolfed it down. He seems fine but it was a high dose (1000 mg), so wouldn't purposesly give it again. Anyone know of giving it to dogs, or have tips I'd appreciate it.

as i once off im sure your dog will be fine but due to the high dose of oil your dog may get the runs, but thats about it.

but personally i wouldnt give them EPO I would stick to cod liver oil, or salmon oil with a lower dosage.

I give my cocker salmon oil every second day his coat is fab.... and he's very healthy etc.

Thanks for the feedback Sara08. The runs was the very thing I was concerned about when he ate it. Cod liver oil it is so. He'll be the handsomest boy in the neighbourhood, next to his fur brother (cocker spaniel).

ohhh post some pictures :wv

or you can also serve them a tin of sardines in sunflower oil, a cheap tin from tesco costs around 56 cents i think, mush them all up and stir it in with their nuts, they will adore it!
and its great for their coat! i give my cocker a tin every saturday, he does a little dance and spinning around when he sees me take the tin out! :o0

No matter how much I dote on them I don't think I could bring myself to buy/serve them tinned fish. I'm nauseous (sp) at the thought of it. I think the capsules will have to suffice. Bad mammy :-8

Ours does his own dance and bum wiggle when happy or excited.. so pretty much all the same. They are a great breed.

EPO is great for dogs but i would only ever give it to female dogs as its mainly a female hormone type supplement.

I would feed an oil like Salmon or Linseed oil, its better than Cod Liver oil.

Sara, one of mine spins around and 'dances' as well when I break open the sardines!!

However, Ellefun, I totally agree, it does smell disgusting, in fact himself has now insisted when sardines are on the menu, they get fed outside and I've agreed, although still have to open the tin and wash it afterwards, it is frankly, vile.

We used to always give our two sardines once a week but now our female retriever gets a very bad dose of the runs every time so we had to stop.
Anyone know why this would start happening? It never used to happen before and they LOVE the sardines so I feel bad that I don’t give it to them anymore

We give our cocker salmon oil each day with his food. Think its about a teaspoon or something. His coat is lovely and shiny and really soft. Must look online for it though as its expensive enough in the pet shop.

We haven't started them on the cod liver oil yet. I had some in the cupboard but they were out of date. Doh! goes to show I'm not great on taking my supplements. Once our cocker has had his visit to the groomers we'll start with the supplements.
