Postby mrswifey09 » Thu Mar 15, 2022 6:16 pm

Ok so firstly I am not a cat person.... I like animals but just not a fan of cats, he (now a SHE) just turned up at our house last June starved and near death. so I felt sorry and fed him and he now lives happily at the front of our house and sleeps in the hayshed, he has the front of the house and the dogs have the back!

He (she will always be a he to me) greats me every day when I come home and I am nice to him and he seems happy!

Well now to the fun but.......my sil was down today and said that she reckons he's a she and due kittens any day.......HELP ME!!!!! What do I need to do for her?! hate th thoughts of it but should I move him/her inside until she has the kittens!? she is a complete outdoor cat so not house trained at all!!

anyone have an tips as to what to do? how will I know when she is labour?! do I help!? oh god.....why me!!!!

Hiya, she should be fine to have the kittens outdoors if that's where she's used to living. The problem with kittens born outside is that they can be very wild and unfriendly if they aren't handled early in life. If the cat is worried about you taking her kittens away she will hide them and then they'll be feral and could simply breed and run wild! The most important thing with outside cats is to get them neutered/spayed so that doesn't happen. I would talk to your local vets and or cat rescue society like cats aid for more advice. The ideal scenario here is that she has the kittens, you cuddle them and make them able to be pets and then you can rehome them when they're old enough. Hope that helps :)

Oh and get the mammy cat neutered if you can, your local rescue might help if you cant afford it. If she doesnt get done she will have about 2 more litters this year alone. Where are you based?

Hey, thanks for that, we gave the cat the choice to come inside or not...and right now she is curled up in our porch in a big basket happy out!! she doesnt even want to go outside when we open the door! so I have given in and would prefer her to have the kittens inside so I can keep an eye....would hate for something to happen them!1 and yes will deffo be getting her neutered asap!! have a few people intereted in the kittens already so will be sure to handle them etc to make sure they are good natured like herself!!

Hi MrsWifey09,

I have been in a similar situtaion to you. We got a young cat a good few years back and it turned out to be expecting kittens. I love cats but I stressed an awful lot about how to deal with the situation, what to do with the kittens etc.

If she has already had her kittens then congrats! If not I would advise you to do the following....

1. Read up online about what happens during cat labour - some of it is a bit strange, eg: Cats will purr while in labour, its their way of coping with the pain. Its good to know this kind of info so you don't get yourself into a panic not knowing what's going on. Its also good to learn how to break the water sack and cut the umbilical cord in case your cat doesnt do it. (Mine was in shock with her first kitten and didnt do this so I had to - the kittens will drown if left in the sack but MOST cats will do this as it comes naturally).

2. Save the website to your favourites for quick access - I was very glad I did this!!

3. Do your best to keep her inside before she gives birth - it sounds like she has made herself at home with you anyway - :) And get a nice big box or bed for her to nest in - preferably with a blanket you dont mind throwing away and allow her to get settled in this before hand.

I hope this is some help to you - Mammy cats also need to eat a great deal more and I bet you'll notice her being extremely hungry in the days after the kittens arrive, I used to bring her food to her regularly throughout the day as she had four gorgeous furballs attached to her 24/7.

I hope you enjoy the experience, it can be messy and a bit scary but I found it amazing to see these tiny babies grow up into beautiful kittens and I'm sure by the end of it you'll be a cat person through and through!
