Upset , COnfused & dont know where to go

Postby craigsmrs » Sun Mar 25, 2022 6:04 pm

Hi Everyone!

Ive got an 8 year old dalmation, have had her since shes 10 weeks old & while she annoys me sometimes I really do love her!

I have 2 kids too, but the problem is my little dd, shes almost 2 & has a really bad allergy to the dog! SInce shes been a baby shes got recurrent sore eyes, I dismissed it as something shed grow out of as my ds was the same & he grew out of it! Anyway, here we are and dds 2 next week & she has a continuous cold & almost constant sore eyes! Its very sad to see her unwell & think its finally time to agree with the doc when he said the other day that dd is allergic to the dog!

Last year when it was 'only a possibility' I tried putting the dog out the back & she constantly barked to the point it was upsetting the neighbours, shes a house dog & Im so confused about what to do with her. Surely, shes too old to rehome? Or what other options do I have ? I have to put dd first & its not fair for her to be unwell all the time, shes only a little baby & i dont want to see her feeling miserable unnecessarily.

Someone please give me some helpful advice as Im really upset about the whole thing!

Hi Graigsmrs,

Sorry to hear about your situation. If you really feel you can't keep your Dog, there's an org on facebook called AHAR, they are based in co. kerry & they re-home all dogs, mostly to the UK. MIght be worth looking up. Also ask your vet if he knows of any re-homing possibilities. Hope it all works out.

Hi OP what part of the country are you based? You could try talking to Dogs Trust or if you let us know what part of the country you are in I might be able to recommend a good rescue you can try and work with.

I am involved in rescue and hate to see people giving up on their dogs but you have a very valid reason and as you say you must put your child first. Fair play for trying to make it work. If you need any recommendations please let me know.

TBH I would be getting 100% proof that it was the dog, all too often the docs say its the dog/cat as its the obvious one but Ive also heard too often that then when they get rid of the dog/cat the problem doesnt go away and then the doc says "oh it must be something else" I not sure what the process is of getting an allergy test done? Have you tried putting him into kennels/friends house etc for a few days/a week and see does your lo improve or not? It must be an awful situation and I really feel for you - I have a 6 month old myself and we have 3 dogs and 3 cats and thankfully they don't seem to bother her although she does sneeze at least once a day? not sure if thats anything to worry about but she did it from day one in the hospital and also in her own room, where animals are not allowed so I dont think its connected but I remember starting to get really, really worried when I heard her sneezing! I just try and keep the house as clean as I can and I hoover rather than sweep as that only raises dust/hairs. I have mentioned it to the nurse etc and they didnt seem bothered about it and she knows we have pets, she did say on a separate occasion that it would be unlikely that dd would ever have allergies coz of the pets.

ETS - Older dogs are generally much harder to rehome although I think yours would have the advantage of being a purebred and Im sure a lovely looking dog, unfortuantly a lot of people will still opt for the better looking dog over its mongrel kennel mate. But I really would be exploring every avenue first.

Thanks so very much for the replies.

We moved in January & have a much bigger garden, so today i fenced off a large section of the garden & had the dog out there for the day, shes fine when she can see us, but like someone elses thread here, when were not around she barks constantly & wrecked the neighbours heads. We've got wooden floors and I hoover all the time, the dog constantly sheds which is a huge problem in itself.. I just cant seem to brush her enough, someone told me today about an electronic brush thats supposed to be amazing, does anyone know anything about such a brush?

I really really dont want to get rid of her, ill try explore every avenue first, i mean ive had her for 8 years shes very much part of my family & id be devastated to lose her.

Meant to say that AHAR org looks like they do great work! I remember years ago long before I got my dog I visited a dublin pound looking for my nanas dog that had got lost & left totally traumatised. They said they destroy dogs after 5 days, so disgusting! What an amazing organisation AHAR is to save dogs from this!

Hi Craigsmrs,

Hope all works out okay and I would definitely get allergy tests done too. There was a poster on here not too long ago and she was having a very similar problem and it turned out not to be the Dog at all.

I think the Child had developed a different allergy altogether. Now, that I think of it there was more than one poster and the other one was that the Child had several food allergies. The Dog is the obvious reason but often it's not the case and hopefully not in yours.

The elctronic gadget you are talking about is called the furminator ( 99% sure) and meant to be great.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear you are maybe having to rehome your dog. Do a search - there was def a poster whos child had real bad allergies and docs were all blaming the dog but she did some research into natural methods i think and her child got on brilliant no more allergies and she got to keep her dog.

Hope it works out for you and you wee dd

Hi that was me, my son has/had asthma and he was really bad couldn't breathe most days and on inhalers everyday etc. DS1 went to tests and the hospital said it was my dog! I just couldn't give her up as it would have been to hard on her, long story short I brought him to a Homepath and she gave him drops to take and it's now nearly 4 months and he hasn't had an attack since, please look into alternative medicine before you give your dog away, am sooooo happy I did.

Best of luck
