How did you get your dog to swim?

Our dog LOVES water. He loves going to the river, the sea, puddles, sticking his head in a bucket of it, wherever he can hes straight to water. Have seen him swim twice but he will not do it again. Once when another dog was there and once when we went to the beach and my OH walked out deep into the sea so he followed him, so we know he can swim. We throw sticks into the river for him but if they go too far he just turns round and looks at you to throw another one, wont go and get it. I know it would be fantastic exercise for him and really tire him out which would be great. We have brought him down with other dogs but he goes in as far as he can still walk and no further. Any tips on what we can do to encourage him, apart from jumping in ourselves? Or is it a waiting game and he'll do it again eventually.

(just thought of this after seeing SorrentoWife's thread about the hydro pools)
