Help! Cat with nose infection

Postby BusyDee » Sun Apr 29, 2022 10:25 am

At my wits end, feel so sorry for our youngest cat (nearly 3) the last 2 months he has developed some kind of nose infection, at first he was totally stuffed up couldnt really breathe through his nose, brought him to the vet and she sedated him to flush out his nostrils as she thought he might have gotten something stuck up there. Nothing came out only thick pus, so she put him on antibiotics, it cleared up for a couple of days but then came back the same. She kept him in then for 2 nights to give him an injection and he seemed to be better but again it returned. Sometimes he would sneeze and some thick pus would come out of his nose but it would be stuck there (sorry!) so he would paw it or I would wipe it with a tissue. Vet doesnt seem to know what to do or what it is. Some days its like he's back to normal and then he's back to square one but now the last few days when he sneezes it flies out of his nose and on the ground :hic Its all over the kitchen floor.

Has this happened anyone else's cat before, any advice??????? Feel so sorry for him the poor thing - he is fine otherwise and his eyes are perfect so its not catflu or anything, he's up to date on his vacc's too.

God, its difficult to say especially if the vet is stumped. It does sound like a viral or bacterial infection tbh. Esp if the antibiotics cleared it up for a while.

Did the vet check the cats teeth? Sometimes issues with their teeth/gums can present as nasal discharge. Is the cat eating ok, if cats cant smell their food they wont eat it.

Also did the vet take blood and run any tests to see if anything showed up on that.

Perhaps there is something lodged up there, maybe discuss an x-ray to find out.

Also would you consider visiting another vet?

Sorry not much help I dont think.

As Chanel said I would maybe get a second opinion, we changed vets because of this, our vet told me I was over reacting. However I was right and when we changed vets and got the correct treatment, all was well. Something like this would worry me because as you know if a cat can't smell then they tend not to eat and you don't need that on top of everything.
Does your vet have a nurse? Sometimes they are just as good.
My heart goes out to you I really hope you can this sorted, I hate seeing my two unwell. Sorry I wasn't much use.

Thanks a million for replying, well I took him in yesterday again and she reckoned that there definitely must be something stuck up his nose as it couldnt be going on this long plus our other 2 cats are fine so thats why she doesnt think its an infection as they would probably have gotten it too, anyway she is an excellent vet tbh I've tried loads of vets through the years and this is the only one I'm happy with so Id be reluctant to go elsewhere. She intially did an xray and nothing showed up and he is in great form otherwise and is eating fine too so thats good.

Anyway she said she would keep him in last night and put him out this morning and give his nostrils a good flush out again and she rang this morning to say that its only in the left nostril and nothing came out again only pus, which confirms our suspicion that there might be something up there. He had a bit of a bleed which she said he probably would so she's keeping him in again tonight to keep an eye on him. Hope to god it works this time!

Ahh poor little fella. That's good to hear that you are happy with your vet, does sound like she is doing all she can.

Please let us know how you get on and if he improves next week, would love to hear how he gets on, and that everything gets sorted, which i'm sure it will.
