Safe dog chew treats/toys

Postby teapotty » Fri May 04, 2022 1:39 pm

Right so from time to time we've given out little terrier/ jack russel (she was rescued so we don't know exactly what she is) rawhide bones from Maxi Zoo. She loves them and is interested in nothing else when she has one so it's great to see her occupied like that. We'd give it to her for an hour or less then take it off her.

But I'm reading now on the internet all about how bad rawhide treats are, choking hazzard, samonella, toxic poisoning etc :eek

So what can I give my very small dog (4kg) to chew on that is safe and healthy?

Tried Kong but she ended up chewing bits of the actual rubber of the Kong off to get at the food so we had to stop that because she was going to end up with a tummy full of Kong rubber :duh:

Would she not play with non food toys? We only give our one latex toys and dont even put any food in the kong.. but if I really want to treat him Id go to the butcher's get some bones, cook them for 30min ( so theyre softer and he doesnt file his teeth down).. this way I know exactly what hes eating :)

No she has no interest in toys unless we are playing with her throwing or tugging it.

It's just that she LOVES to eat and seems so happy chewing on something that is hard work or challenging. Maybe boiled bones are the best thing so?

Our dog loves eating too never gets enough! If we ignore him he'd play with his toys and always falls asleep with one of them in his mouth...

There probably is no perfect treat! Rawhide bone may not be natural and the natural bones can get stuck on the way etc. I mean look at coke and all the sweets there is so many colourants preservatives, glues in them and yet parents give them to their kids... You should give the one you feel is right as long as your dog is happy :)

Dog Training Ireland recommended a bone called Nylabone to us after Buddy went mental with a real ham one! I think I've seen them in Maxi Zoo but haven't bought one.
Which Kong did you buy? We have the red one and theres no way Buddy can chew any of the rubber. We also have a Kong Wobbler which he loves. Would she play with a ball where treats fall out of it?

I agree totally with Alex, use your judgement as to whats right for your dog. I have a JR cross and he adores rawhide bones. He has been chewing them since he was old enough and we have never had an issue. Would never give him one unsupervised as I do know they can be a choking hazard if a big bit comes off. Apart from that Im happy to give him the rawhide as a treat every now and again.

Hey there, just new to the site and just found this thread, pets forum and weddings website? That's something new!! Anyway I rescued a little dog over 6 months ago and he's like my baby! I'm very careful about food/treats/toys and will never buy rawhide after hearing about a dog recently that died from intestinal blockage from this stuff. It has no nutritional value and is extremely dangerous. I don't understand how it's sold in pet shops, dog training ireland don't stock because it's so bad. I did find a great chew for Jack in muttugly recently, it's made from papaya the fruit and he lovessss it. 100% fruit from what I saw on the packet and smells lovely and fruity. Anyway just thought I'd make a mention here because it's nice to know what alternatives there are out there. Chat soon :)))
