What to do if you want to get married abroad:
1. Pick a destination. (Rome is the best  ). Consider a short trip if you are not familiar with the city/area to check out hotels and venues. 2. Find a church/registry office and ideally a celebrant that speaks the same language as you! Find out the costs associated with the type of service you want and make sure they are agreed on before hand. 3. Price flights. Bear in mind the ammount of wedding related stuff you will have to take with you so make sure you check with the airline before you fly. 4. Break the news to your family! Be prepared for some objection to a foreign wedding. 5. Come on to WOL and beg fellow foreign brides for help.  OK girlies there are many of you out there with a lot more experience than me so get typing. [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

Speak to Peggy in Department of Foreign Affairs Consular section for advice on legal paperwork she works morning only and her number is 01 4780822 ext - 2568
Contact the embassy here of the country in which you wish to get married for any other paperwork required. Government Website: http://oasis.gov.ie/relationships/marri ... broad.html General Info website with forum: http://www.weddings-abroad-guide.com
I highly dispute that Rome is the best - ahem Make a spreadhseet on a month to month basis of what legal paperwork needs to be done when Make sure that all family have up to date passports especially if their passport is due to expire within 6 months of date of travel - get them to renew it now to save bother tell objectors to puddle off that you weren't going to invite them anyway as for which destination is the best? well there is no contest - MALTA RULES [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/w0Gw7EH/]
Italy Legal - Religious and Civil
Civil Wedding Documents (Also needed for Catholic ceremonies) • Original birth certificate of bride and groom • Photocopy of passports for bride and groom and two witnesses • Irish passport holders need to apply for permission to marry abroad to the Department of Foreign Affairs who will issue a form to fill in. This will be sent to the Irish Embassy in Rome who will issue the 'Nulla Osta'. Sunway will advise you where to get the Embassy to send the 'Nulla Osta' on your behalf. • If divorced a decree absolute and original marriage certificate. Please note in Italy a women must be divorced at least 300 days before she can marry. • If adopted - Adoption certificate • If widowed - a death certificate of former spouse and marriage certificate • If name change by dead poll - original documentation Religious Wedding Documents Pre-nuptial enquiry form for each party (obtained from your present parish.) · Baptismal certificate, issued from the parish of your baptism and dated within the last six months (an old certificate from your Confirmation days will not do). · Confirmation certificate issued from the parish of your confirmation and dated within the last six months. · Permission from the bride’s Parish Priest (or one of his curates) that she may be married outside her own parish. When these documents have been gathered for both parties, they should be forwarded by the bride’s parish priest to his bishop for a covering letter and then dispatched to the Irish College at the address on page 1. In particular circumstances, some extra documents may be required. Your local clergy will say whether these are needed: Letters of freedom from places where either party has lived for a considerable period since their sixteenth year. Mixed marriage dispensation: all the papers for a mixed marriage are prepared by the priest of the Catholic partner. Where required, a document certifying the cessation of a previous bond, e.g. a death certificate, or a decree of nullity Where required, a document certifying the dispensation of an impediment. When completing forms, you will be asked the name of the Church in Rome and also the name of the priest in charge of arrangements. PREPARATION Attendance at a pre-marriage course is strongly recommended for all couples getting married in Rome. Suitable courses are held regularly under the direction of Accord. Alternatively, a couple might prefer to enrol in an Engaged Encounter weekend. Your local clergy will advise how to go about attending either of these. [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

All the main aspects of marrying in Rome seem covered here, but it may be worth noting that the Churches in Rome will book out before any restaurant or venue, so the moment you decide to book your wedding abroad you should confirm a date with the priest over there. Other than that Rome07's last post seems to cover pretty much everything (one organised gal :!: )
There are two wedding planners in Lanzarote. They are www.lanzaroteweddings.com and www.weddingslanzarote.com. They will organise everything for you and give you help with the paperwork. Alot of travel operators now offer Lanzarote as a wedding destination too.
Nothing much to add at the moment. The paperwork is pretty much covered in Rome07 post as far as I can see (very helpful. Thanks!). Getting married in Tuscany in September so am getting Nulla Osta organised at the moment. Have the religious paperwork done and it was very straight forward.
For a civil marriage you have to be there a few days before because most local authorities require a formal declaration to be made before the wedding. I don't think this applies for a Catholic Ceremony. You would probably be best to contact your priest and double check with him.

We are flying out to Italy on the Tuesday and getting married on the Friday which is standard. We have to go down to the town hall on the Wednesday to sign stuff then.
The guy co-ordinating our wedding over there says this is the normal amount of time - he's organised loads of weddings there so far and no problems re not being there long enough beforehand... H Me 38, DH 38
