Day 21 bloods

Girls does anyone know anything about day 21 bloods?

Right so I got these blood tests last week on CD20 cos 21 was a saturday. I am now on CD27 and no AF yet. Spoke to the doc and he reckons that he did bloods on wrong day as he reckons I hadnt ovulated yet and will have a longer cycle this month. So what does this mean? Like if I get AF on Sunday say does this mean I didnt ovulate or whats the situation? I didnt use opks this month.

I usually get sore boobs for 2 days or sometimes a week before AF is due but so far nothing. My cycles usually range from 25 - 31 days.

Hi Petri
The day 21 bloods should really be called Peak+7 bloods. You can actually get them done on P+6, P+7, P+8 or P+9 as the Progesterone peaks on those days.

You need to start monitoring your cycles to understand
a) when your peak is like you said with OPKs, or your mucus or temping and
b) how long your luteal phase (the # of days after ovulation). The experts say the Luteal Phase does not change in each cycle - it is the number of days up to ovualation that can change i.e. ovualation can be delayed, but not your period once you count your normal LP from ovulation. Therefore, once you figure out your LP, you will be able to predict the first day of your AF once you identify your peak day.

I chart with Napro, and can always tell, within 24 hours, when my AF will arrive once I have recorded my peak on my chart (using the mucus checks, altho I don't get a whole lot of it!)

Your doc is assuming you have a 14 day Luteal Phase - that your AF will arrive 7 days after your Day 21 bloods as this is another misconception with docs. The reality is some women can have really short LPs (10 days), others can have really long ones. It really is a guessing game using CD21 - you are better off scheduling your bloods once you know you've hit the peak (the day after the last ewcm).

Feb 2012 P=63.8; O=809 (Good Cycle # 1)
Mar 2012 P=70.9; O=603 (Good Cycle # 2)
Apr 2012 P=24.9; O=721 Not a Good Cycle :(
May 2012 P=39; O=844 Not a Good Cycle :(

Petri,

I second everything that Pema has stated above.

I have a 10 day luteal phase so on a 28 Day Cycle I would ovulate on Day 18 for example so my bloods (often referred to mistakenly as Day 21) should be taken on Day 18 + 7 Days in order to get accurate progesterone results, etc.

A lot of GP's take bloods on Day 21 but this is only of any use if you ovulate on Day 14 (which a lot of people including myself don't).

In order to know when I ovulated I bought the Clearblue Digital Ovulation (smiley face brand) but these aren't cheap or order the OPK's from somewhere like www.happybumps.com. It is only when you know when you ovulate that you will be able to calculate your luteal phase and when precisely you should be having your bloods taken.
