First night in own room- disaster!!

So i decided to be brave and put my dd into her own room. We are on a different floor so have been anxious about doing it- but she is nearly 8 months so I decided last night was the night!
Well... Can honestly say it was our worst night with her. We are both wrecked. She woke at 2.30 and we were up and down to her about 10 times. Finally at 5 we brought her back up to us and she slept like a log until 8 this morn ( which is WAY later than normal !)

Don't know what to do now. Didn't think at 8 months that she would notice that much and she looked so comfortable. It may have been just co-incidence and her teeth were at her or something. :zzzz:

Im afraid il have her in with us forever (well I wouldn't mind that at all but my dh thinks it's defo time for her to be in her room).

TRC, had to reply as went thru exact same with DS recently at 6 months. Now we are not on a different floor, but otherwise had a v similar experience, first night was horrendous. Worst night we had since he started STTN at 7 weeks! However my advice is to stick with it. We are doing much better now and all sleeping great. DS still wakes in the middle of the night (i can hear him) but he goes back to sleep by himself now (took a night or two of us picking him up and ssshing him). I miss having him in our room (like you it was DHs idea to move him) but I love bringing him in for morning cuddles... As does his Daddy.

TRC have you tried getting your DD used to the room first? When DS used to wake early in the mornings we used to put him into his own room and turn on his light show and he would happily stay there for a while and would often fall back to sleep. Not sure if it was the result of this or not but when we put DS into his own room for the night it didn't bother him at all. He slept the same as always. We put him down to sleep awake and I was afraid we'd have a battle the first night but as I said he went off no problem at all. He does wake sometimes but he quite happily talks to himself and then falls back to sleep.

We also have DD on a differenet floor and I was so reluctant to move her cause I'm lazy at night having to move! :o0

she evnetually moved at just under a year cause I got sick and couldn't ahve her in the room. NOt a bother. She was obvioysly ready for it and just went with the flow.

Only once did I have to bring her back in to our room when she was very sick with a high temp and I needed to check her hourly - wasn't goign up and down a flight of stairs to do that!

If it was me I'd keep her back in a few nights with us but get her to do her naps during hte day in that room then try night again. She's at the age where she knows what's happening and you don't want her to take a dislike to the room and never want to be in it.

I've read David Coleman's book "parenting is childs play" and his advice on moving baby to their own room is to do it slowly. Get baby used to their room, spend time there everyday day, place baby in their cot while you move about the room and maybe leave them for a few minutes, safely. Put them down for their naps in the room and gradually get them used to it.
We still haven't moved dd to her own room. I'm happy with her where she is for now but I know it'll be a struggle when we do, she's like her mammy, doesn't respond well to change :-8

Haven't moved DS yet. DH moved cot last week and as soon as I saw it gone from the room I got sad and I moved it back in. Am back to work on Friday :o(

so will have to face the move this week-thanks for those tips- just ordered the book (Now I just need to find a book that tells me how not to become crazy neurotic mammy, as am well on the way).
Thai tell us how you get on with next few nights?

Stick with it for 3 nights thats key, it takes 3 nights to break/start a new habit!

thanks for the replies ladies.

well i was tempted just to bring her back up with us last night but i stuck with it.
Usually she is asleep in 10/15 mins after i put her in her cot. I have to pop the soother in a few times sometimes but then she drifts off. But she did kick up again a little last night going to bed- was an hour between putting her down and when she fell asleep. She kept spitting soother out and crying. But we got there eventually.

She woke a good few times then before I went to bed whimpering and actually fired her soother across the room :o0

Each time I just shushed and gave her the soother back. She only woke twice then after I went to bed at about 2.30 and 3.30. Then she slept right through until 7 this morn! so not bad at all :o)ll

I had been putting her into her cot to play and also started her afternoon nap there and she had no problem. I think its a little darker in her room now as she had 2 big velux windows over her in our room.
Anyway will keep ya posted about the next few nights O:o)

well unfortunately the 'three days to change a habit' hasnt kicked in here yet :o(

its just getting worse- after going down to dd 5 times between 1.30 and 2.30 last night, I was very bold and carried her upstairs into her old crib beside me. :-8

I just needed some sleep! ive probably just undone any of the progress we had made (if any) but i got a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. I actually cant face those stairs tonight O:|

but she is back in her 'big' cot so we will see how we get on again tonight

by the way have any of you ever moved your baby back into your room after the 'official moving out' to their cot? im very tempted :-8

Oh sorry to hear it's not working out yet. I think though you are better off trying to stick with it as next time it might be even harder. Is there anything she does have in her crib that she doesn't have in her cot that she might be missing? DS wears a grobabg to bed and I think that's why he settles anywhere. He knows his grobag means bed. I use teddy blanket for naps only.

What worked for us was our LO went for naps in their room during the day for a few days b4 putting them down at night in new room. This transition was slow and progressed up to sleeping all night in their own room. Maybe try this for the rest of the week and at the weekend try the night time then when you can give each other a break during the day to nap if it's been a long night with little sleep. Also rocking and shushing when they wake up is a really bad idea. Just pick them up hold them but don't interact too much and def don't have a chat or turn on the light you wake them up and then they see the 'strange' surroundings. Good luck stick with it!

I followed this advice re moving in for naps first and touch wood he doesn't seem to have had any real probs with the transition-bet now that I have said that I will be up all night!

I have had some very good nights lately (and the odd strange one)

Orwyne- i started putting her into her cot for naps and bed and it seems to have sorted it out. I put her in and she is asleep within 10 mins-both for naps and at bed time now!

she had gone 4nights in a row of sleeping 7.30- 7 the next morn- without ANY soother interruptins too!!!!!! :o)ll

the difference in my mood with a full nights uninterrupted sleep is unreal :o0

anyway, last night we had two 'soother-runs' but i cant really complain
I think maybe she is more comfortable as there is a lot more room and she LOVES snuggling up into the bumper (probably not that safe according to some people :-8

)
