Help - how much food to give??

Help - how much food to give??

Postby elizajane » Fri May 04, 2022 9:35 pm

Hi there

Question for anyone out there who has started solids
HAve 6 month old twins - started them on solids last wk - first food was apple puree, after 5 days of just that I introduced baby rice. All going great so far - mayb too good!
The guidelines ive read from HSE is 1-6 spoons to start with. I done that but my pair of ladies nearly take the house down screaming for more - this is the case whether they're fed before or after their breast feed. Lets take today for example - 6th day on solids, i gave apple puree for lunch - 15 spoons (werent big spoons - the plastic baby ones that dont hold much - worked out at 3 ice cubes of apple puree) and this evening I gave baby rice and they took 20 spoons of this - they would have kept going if i kept giving it to them. Ive heard ppl say to feed till the baby turns away from the spoon - i feel i could be still there feeding waiting for that to happen with my pair!!

What i cannot find is any guidelines as to how much solid a baby should take say after 1 wk, after 1 month, after 3 months, for each meal. As in lets say - should they take 2oz solid at each meal after one week.......

Could anyone share their experience here or suggest a link/book to reference on the issue.

(just FYI - girls are still getting the same number of breast feeds as they would have been before solids)

I was worried about this too when I started dd on solids! She kept opening her mouth looking for more after the very first time so I gave her about 10 spoons!!! It was baby rice and she probably spat out most of it so in reality she probably had maybe 5/6 spoons. I gave her a bottle of milk straight after incase she was still hungry as they say to not over do it too quick coz its a shock to their digestive system to suddenly get something else other than milk. I think I gradually started to increase the amount after about 3 days.

Every baby is so different that why there is no concrete guidelines, I remember asking my MIL when did she start DH and his sister on solids (30+ years ago) and she said 8 weeks was the guidelines back then :eek and there was no pus sy footing around with baby rice or purees it was straight into the spuds and veg and meat :yelrotflmaosmilie: Any wonder DH is over 6ft tall :o0

on both I just gave as much as they wanted til full, or til I thought theyy'd enough and then offered milk feed instead.

both were great eaters and ate all around them, even though both are still tiny for their age!

I am wondering the exact same thing. DS loves his solids started him about a week ago as he has bad reflux otherwise I would have liked to wait although in saying that he was more than ready. the first day he had some he was crying for more.the other day I tried him with butternut squash and he was crying for another spoon the second I took the last spoon out. He is getting about 10-15 small spoons but he would eat a lot more. I am not sure at what stage to give him more and no idea when to up to 2 feeds a day. it is all a bit confusing.

Thanks for yer replies - they're still gobbling up every last mouthful we put in front of them, on 3 meals now and 5bf and 1 bottle feed going to bed to them - I suppose ive little to complain about - they were weighed a few days before they started solids and are going this week to get their shots and the nurse will weight them again - till be interesting to see what they've gained!
