Minimizing discomfort when going from boob to bottle??

Minimizing discomfort when going from boob to bottle??

Postby Jabberwocky » Thu May 10, 2022 7:26 pm

Hi all,

I bf my baby at 5am or so and don't bf again till bedtime. I had only a bit of discomfort when I dropped the morning (9ish) and lunchtime (1ish) feeds. I have since dropped the 5pm feed but am finding that my body doesn't seem to be adjusting very quickly. I have basketball boobs from about 3pm onwards. By the time it comes to the bedtime feed I am really uncomfortable and baby fusses a lot because the flow is too fast (even if I express a bit first). I have started giving a bottle of ebm at this time and expressing instead because I just can't sleep if I go to bed with full boobs. Any tips on getting the supply down? I'm worried I am doing damage to my boobs, stretch marks etc by all this messing around. Any tips welcome!
Thanks,
J
PS. Do cabbage leaves really help??

cold cabbage leaves do help, the cabbage is supposed to be a natural anti-inflammatory and the cold is like pain relief.. you can change them as often as you need

I dont know why your body hasnt adjusted over a few a days this time around. The only thing I can think of is maybe you are eating food that increases milk production at lunch time, and this makes it worse? I know things like porridge, beer, oats etc are supposed to increase supply, as does motilium (the tablets).. and any stimulation, including the shower

So are you expressing just at bedtime now, or at other times during the day?

I found expressing really increased my supply no matter what time I expressed at - could you just hand express small amounts to relieve discomfort instead of pumping? use a warm towel and massage the milk out, help prevent blocked ducts and mastitis too. maybe you need to drop that feed slower , like every second day?
