POLL - Electric toothbrush for your LO's??

Postby wedjul05 » Fri May 11, 2022 1:56 pm

Would ye get an electric toothbrush for your LO's??

My DH is nagging me lately in that we should get some for the kids but I'm not sure. Some part of me is saying it would be too harsh for their teeth.

Sorry to butt in, I'm not a Mammy but just to say I'd wonder, not about how harsh these woudl be, I'm sure they'd be fine, but if giving an electric toothbrush when they're wee would hinder them learning how to actually brush their teeth?

I have a load of nieces and nephews and they're all now brushing their teeth by themselves (with some assistance from Mammy) and it's all about 'brush in circular motions, that's it, now get those teeth right at the back, good boy, now scrub along the side, gently down by the gums, great job' and all of that? Do you get me? So maybe the electric toothbrush doing all that for them would mean they'd never learn how to fully clean their teeth manually?

Just a thought now and I could be totally wrong and actually it might not matter if they don't learn how to do it manually maybe it's not a big deal! I don't know, just throwing it out there! Would you wait until they're a bit older maybe eight or nine when they've had a good grounding in proper teeth brushing?

Why is your husband so keen to get the the electric ones, is there a study to say theyr'e better or something?

An Orthodontist colleague of mine thinks that either is fine as long as they are being used properly. Parents should be cleaning their childrens teeth (followed by the child cleaning them) until they're 7yrs. I also seem to remember hearing that you're actually less likely to over-brush with an electric toothbrush.

My friend's dentist told her they shouldn't be used on kids under 12, as they don't know how to use them properly and end up damaging their gums. (That's what happened to her DS). So nope I wouldn't be getting them any time soon.

Do they have kids ones? I would be interested in this just to try and get LO's teeth cleaned well a couple of times a week. Presently, it is a quick brush and I am obsessed with teeth, I wish i could brush them longer but then it woule turn into a fight and he would not want me near his teeth at all! I have a lovely, but very stubborn 2 year old :-8
