Experiences with speech therapy

I have asked our PHN for a referral letter for a speech therapist for ds. He has about ten words and refuses to use them.

I'm not worried or anything just want to get him some help.

Has anyone got any experience with speech therapy? I would like to know what to expect.

It is likely that the SLT will assess LO and your LO will not show the SLT his true ability much to ur frustration, but u can tell her what his strenghts and weaknesses are and that will give her an idea of him. If she shares ur concerns, she will book him on for therapy, therapy will be either with other kids or on his own.
If it is with other kids, u r not being conned out of a one to one service, it just means he is able to be in a group i.e. has the attention span to cope with other children OR that there is a similar child on the caseload who he could be grouped with, a group is lovely for the child as they learn of each other and the whole focus is not on them.
It may be individual therapy either in which case the pro is that you might feel more confident urself asking questions.
Initial therapy will actually focus on the SLT informally assessing your LO, i.e. getting a real idea of his ability as at his age he may not show his true ability on formal assessment.

Speech and Language Therapy is actually fun for a child and parent but obviously stressful for a concerned parent too. It will look like the SLT is playing with your child... which she is but she is teaching him through play. The idea of SLT is to teach the parent what to do at home so going to sessions is really a way to teach you how to facilitate language development at home. You should feel free to ask as many questions as u like.
