alternatives to time out

hi everyone,
im using time-out as a consequence with a little boy for hitting /PA .its by front door & has little/no stimulation there but he will self stimulate ie.play by crossing fingers,twirl hair etc . he is 2.5yrs& does not have special needs but i thought it might be an idea to post here as you always have better ideas. He doesnt have any established reinforcers ( so i guess thats the first thing il need to do) .was told he liked a particular doll so saved this as reward/lost it as consequence etc but to no avail. using time out is in no way working! reward charts are beyond his comprehension & his hitting has got worse - any ideas pls pls pls
