ASD Advice

Postby robsmum » Sat Mar 20, 2022 8:01 pm

Hi.

I have a two year old DS who is being referred by the PHN, GP and myself for assessment for possible ASD.

The PHN has referred him for ELS, and we have had one appointment with the Assessment Officer.

My GP and myself have referred him for an Assessment of Needs, which should start in June of this year.

Is there anything else I should be doing in the meantime? Would it be worthwhile to get him seen privately? If so, is there anyone you can recommend in the Cork area?

Any advice or information would be most grateful.

I work in a residential centre for children with ASD ranging from children with severe Autism to mild Aspergers. Our children have obviously been diagnosed before coming to us so I dont know a huge amount about the actual diagnosis process.
However from speaking to parents I do know the assessment process and initial diagnosis can be a horribly long and mulitfaceted experience. My only piece of advice is to keep ringing looking for an appointment. I know of families who have had to wait for 2 yrs because of lack of staff on the multidisciplinary assessment teams. I know there is a waiting list but if you are ringing constantly looking for update on an appointment you are much more likely to be slotted in.
It may be worth going privately if you can afford it as the sooner a child is diagnosed on the spectrum the sooner you can get linked in with services and with Autism the earlier the intervention the better the outcome. Speak to your gp about what professionals he/she would recommend you going to privately.
If you are willin to travel to Dublin the IAA have a centre in Dublin called the Solas Centre which im to diagnose wthin 3 months http://www.autismireland.ie/listing.asp?id=46 for info
I would also advice you to get in contact with irish Autism Action and im sure there is a local supprt group for parents. Even though your child is not diagnosed it may be beneficial to speak to parents who have gone thru the process and may be able to give more advice than me. There is also an IAA helpline and might be worth giving them a call 1890 818 518.
Hope this is of some help to you.
any other questions i am happy to help if i know the answer. I am not an expert on the whole diagnosis process but i do know alot about Autism
Hope you and DS are keeing well xx

Hi Robsmum,
Just reading your post and wondering to whom your child has been referred to. A diagnosis of ASD needs, as afar as I know a multi disciplinary assessment and even if diagnosed, there are very limited services available to your child through the public system at the moment. My tuppence worth is If you are in the Cork area, I suggest you look up SHINE, IRELAND. They are based in Carrigaline and work exclusively with children with ASD.

My teenage son has an adhd, as an alternative treatment I enrolled him to a therapeutic boarding schools for adhd and add. Maybe when he turns into pre-teen you can try enrolling him to some programs with therapeutic approach.
