activities for tummy time
Hi all,
My daughter Shauna who is 16 months old was born with arthogryposis. She gets physio every two weeks which I then carry out at home. We had a session today and our physio has told us that it is still very important that she does plenty of tummy time as she has just started sitting independently and is loving it hence is no longer very interested in doing tummy time. Up to now I would build up a tower of blocks for her to crawl over to on her tummy to knock and keep moving it. I also make a jigsaw for her to come over to on her tummy. Has anyone any other ideas which might keep her entertained on her tummy? All suggestions would be really welcome. Thanks,
Re: activities for tummy time
Would you get down on the floor with her and maybe flick through a book? You could use one that has those textures and things? I'm trying to think what DS likes, he likes lying on the floor and whispering to each other

Dairyqueen,
Thanks for replying, I spend my day down on the floor with her but she still gets cranky sometimes! My dh has meant her a little bench for sitting on to practise her trunk control (recommended by ot, I also attend enable) but its just at the perfect height for her to crawl over to and pull herself onto her knees leaning on it. Its great that she is going onto her knees but its getting harder for her to do tummy time which we need to build up her shoulder muscles. Its a dilema!! What I have done is taken her out into the hallway to do tummy time. Its a change of scenery and at least she doesn't have the bench to climb onto.. How is your son doing?
Re: activities for tummy time
He's doing really well, I'm really weepy and feeling sorry for him at the moment.
![]() But he is now walking independentley which is HUGE and something they thought he would do but not for a long time so we are chufffed. It's amazing to see him progress and the smallest things that are normal to most kids are such a huge achievment for him and he is so proud of himself. In a way I dreard when DD is up and walking as she will overtake him and be running and climbing before he's able. A change of scenery sounds like the way to go, what about out in the garden now that the weather is so nice? or a really interesting mat with things that you could point out and talk about with her? Re: activities for tummy time
yea i got her one of those foamy pieces that you put together in Smyths so will try that too for a while. Well done to your ds for walking independently. We have being told that dd won't walk but we are not going to give up hope completly. She is able to stand on her knees now for v. short periods and even yesterday she shuffled along on her knees while I was holding her hands. She is a real determined little girl.
I too get weepy about the whole thing but tell me does it get easier? I hope it does!!
Re: activities for tummy time
Maybe a musical instrument like keyboard or xylophone she could play whilst lying on the tummy? A I think a book is a good idea also, maybe one with sound efects where she can press buttons etc to keep her interested?
Re: activities for tummy time
Hi WOC
Have you tried rubbing her back/giving her a back massage - My little boy hated tummy time too until I clicked that if i massaged his back he would be happy enough to stay on his tummy !!! Typical boy i know !!! Just a suggestion.. If you want to give it a try contact me and I will send you on a few of the back massage movements from my class. Cheers Rachel. Baby massage cork
